BADMAASH COMPANY-A HIT THAT SHAHID DESPARATELY NEEDS!
Shahid is loved not only because of his baby-faced looks but also because he’s a sincere actor who always comes up with a fine performance. I was pleasantly surprised to see the way he pitched in a performance expected usually from superstars in Chance Pe Dance (CPD). In fact, he took the film to another level which was otherwise a meaningless flick! Before CPD, he was seen in Dil Bole Hadippa which had become the laughing stock of the town! And 3 weeks back, he again came up with an honest performance in Paathshaala. Unfortunately, the script and direction let him down and the film was simply a waste of time.
Dil Bole Hadippa, Chance Pe Dance and Paathshaala…after delivering these 3 flops, what Shahid now requires is a much needed hit! And his tomorrow’s release, Badmaash Company, might be that crucial film which can change his fortune! Being a Yash Raj Films product, Badmaash Company can turn out to be a nice surprise (like Rocket Singh) or it can be one of those Dil Bole Hadippa-type illogical flick! However, there are 2 instances that give an indication that the film might be really rocking! One, Shahid had already got involved in his father Pankaj Kapur’s directorial debut film Mausam when he was offered Badmaash Company. So much was Shahid impressed with director Parmeet Sethi’s script that he pushed forward Mausam in order to accommodate Badmaash Company! And two, Aditya Chopra was also thoroughly and pleasantly surprised with Parmeet Sethi’s directorial skills and signed a 3-film deal with him!
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the film now has no chances of disappointing but this certainly proves that Badmaash Company can turn out to be a decent entertainer and the chances for it are high! Shahid-Anushka jodi is amazing and it’s good to see Chang and funny guy Vir Das in the cast! YRF, notorious for not promoting their films well has surprisingly haven’t compromised in the promotional front of Badmaash Company. As a result, the film has created hype considerably!
Let’s hope this film turns out to be nice and gets decent number of audiences!
GURINDER CHADHA’S BACK!
Gurinder Chadha, who created a fan following after her films, Bend It Like Beckham and Bride And Prejudice is back with an interesting entertainer, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife. Starring Shabana Azmi and hottie Sendhil Ramamurthy, the film’s publicity has been very satisfactory. Promos began a month ago, a rarity when it comes to such films. The film has made everyone aware of its presence although it hasn’t excited the audiences much. Also unfortunately, the film opened to dismal houses in UK when it released there 2 weeks back although the response has been alright. The film releases in India tomorrow in English and in Hindi as well (Hai Marjawaan).

The budget crunch has eaten into one of the biggest production houses in the entertainment industry. According to well-placed sources close to Yash Raj Films, the banner which had till recently a reputation for an unbroken string of hits has now after setbacks like Dil Bole Hadippa, Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year and Pyaar Impossible instructed its roster of directors to shoot within reasonable budgets.
And financially impractical projects are a strict no-no. This, Kabir Khan discovered when after New York he decided to make a lavish big-budget epic. Initially, Aditya Chopra the Yash Raj scion was enthusiastic about the novel idea and gave Kabir a cart-blanche…
But as the script evolved it became clear to the producers that Kabir Khan’s epic would be one of the most expensive films in the history of Yash Raj.
Aditya Chopra sat Kabir down for a meeting and calmly told him the epic project was not working.
Admits Kabir, “Yes I’ve abandoned my earlier script. This was a subject I had with me from even before I made my first feature film Kabul Express. You can say it’s my dream project. And my dream is now on hold.”
Kabir confirms that Aditya Chopra asked him to work on another more financially feasible subject. “After working on the earlier script for several months, I’m writing a new script. It’s more of a fun film than New York. It is definitely not about global terrorism this time. I’ve said whatever I have had to on that subject. But a socio-political undercurrent can’t be too far away from what I do.”
As for Kabir’s dream project, he hasn’t given up on it. “That’s the film I became a feature-director for. I won’t give it up.”

Shahid Kapoor is not new to controversies. In fact, every time a movie starring the talented actor is ready to unfurl, stories about Shahid having problems with the director surface first, followed by news of romantic liaisons with the film’s leading lady.
In the past, it was said Shahid had serious differences with Priyadarshan [CHUP CHUP KE], Aziz Mirza [KISMAT KONNECTION], Vishal Bhardwaj [KAMINEY], Anurag Singh [DIL BOLE HADIPPA!] and Ken Ghosh [CHANCE PE DANCE]. Is he difficult to work with? “Isn’t it strange that people ask this question every time my movie is complete? I am asked to clarify if the director and I see eye to eye… It amuses me no end,” Shahid smiles.
Reportedly, Shahid and Parmeet Sethi, the actor who makes his directorial debut with BADMAASH COMPANY, had difference of opinion over the climax of the film. “All discussions took place while we were in the [script] reading stages. If any changes were to be made, they had to be implemented before we began filming. Yes, I did express my opinion to Adi [Chopra] and Parmeet about a certain portion in the film. They agreed because they were convinced about it. But there were no issues when we began filming,” Shahid clarifies. Shahid feels that Parmeet is a supremely talented director. “I am glad I agreed to work in BADMAASH COMPANY. Parmeet is a fine storyteller. In fact, I keep wondering, why didn’t he take to direction earlier? Direction is his true calling,” Shahid states.
There’s also talk that BADMAASH COMPANY is the newer, updated version of BUNTY AUR BABLI. True? Shahid laughs, “I’ve heard this one too, but I am just going to say just this. Watch BADMAASH COMPANY to know the difference. Frankly, why would anyone want to remake a successful film that’s still so fresh in the minds of the audience? BADMAASH COMPANY is not similar to any film. Not BUNTY AUR BABLI for sure.”

The promo of Yash Raj Films’ next release Badmaash Company starring Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in lead roles was unveiled last week and going by the looks of it, the film promises to be a complete entertainer. Directed by Parmeet Sethi, the film tells the story of four friends (Shahid, Anushka, Chang and Vir Das) who want to make it big in life.
For both Shahid and Anushka, this is the second film with the coveted Yash Raj banner. While Shahid starred in the fairly ordinary Dil Bole Hadippa alongside Rani Mukherjee, Anushka made a super debut opposite none other than SRK in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
In Badmaash Company however, both Shahid and Anushka would be seen in a young, fresh and altogether new look. Anushka, who in her first film, was mostly seen sporting Indian wear has gone glamorous for this role wearing cool and funky tops and hot pants. Shahid on the other hand too seems to be sporting a new cropped spiked look compared to his long hair look in Dil Bole Hadippa.
Apparently, both Shahid and Anushka had a great time shooting for the film. There were a few sequences in the movie where the cast needed to shoot some water sports and games. Shahid and Anushka took this sportsmanship very seriously and carried on playing games like badminton and beach volleyball even after pack up. To everyone’s surprise, Anushka turned out to be the better player and beat Shahid everyday.
At the end of the day as long as the movie turns out to be victorious at the B.O., Shahid couldn’t care less. What say?
HARSHADA REGE Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; March 28, 2010)
Opposites, they say, always attract. This definitely holds true for apna Bollywood couples. The current trend indicates that this is the season for trying out new jodis even though they don’t fit into the conventional mould. Be it Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sensharma in Wake Up Sid, Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah in Ishqiya, Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in Karthik Calling Karthik or Ajay Devgan and Konkona in Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?, these seemingly odd couples managed to create a lot of buzz on the Bollywood circuit. And the encouraging box office reports will only ensure that more such combinations are tried out in the future. Odd couples, definitely, seem to be the order of the day. However, this isn’t a recent phenomenon as earlier too, some unusual jodis have garnered a lot of interest among the audience. Kareena Kapoor and Rahul Bose in Chameli, Sanjay Dutt and Gracy Singh in Munnabhai MBBS, Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukerji in Dil Bole Hadippa! and more recently Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra in Pyaar Impossible have also been a hot topic of discussion among movie watchers.
It’s mostly the need for ‘fresh’ pairs that drives filmmakers to cast an actor who’s a known face among the masses along with an actress known for her acting capabilities and vice versa. Wake Up Sid director Ayan Mukerji feels that Ranbir-Konkona made a great pair. He questions the concept of an odd couple saying, “It’s about people and about relationships. Any two people who get along with each other can be friends.”
But no one can deny the crackling chemistry between these seemingly odd couples that have won them appreciation from the audience as well as the critics. Look at the chemistry between Farhan and Deepika! Director Vijay Lalwani finds it an interesting combination. “It’s a fresh pair, not an odd couple. They weren’t cast before Karthik Calling Karthik and that made them an interesting pair. Both of them suited the roles they had to enact,” he says. Speaking about the chemistry between the couples, Ranbir Kapoor says, “Chemistry is not something that two individuals have, it’s what two characters have in a film.” And while most of these pairs have been of actors who fall within a certain age bracket, the chemistry between Vidya and a much older Naseeruddin Shah had the audience holding their breath. The year ahead will see Bollywood mix-n-match even more. While Salman Khan will be seen opposite 21-year-old Sonakshi Sinha in Dabangg, Priyanka Chopra will have Naseeruddin Shah as well as his son Vivaan among her seven husbands in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf.
THREE INTERESTING FILMS THIS WEEKEND!
Tomorrow, three small-budget but very interesting films are all set to hit the screens. My take:
LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA: The film has a title which more than half of the population would hesitate mentioning! Thankfully, to make things easier, the makers of the film has emphasized more on the abbreviation of the title-LSD! India’s first digital film, LSD is based on a voyeurism and from the promos it seems to be a truly path-breaking film. The film has no famous actor at all and yet the film has scored because of its title, theme and promos. Also it is directed by Dibakar Banerjee who has impressed many by his last 2 films-Khosla Ka Ghosla and ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’. However, LSD is a completely new territory and there are high chances that the makers might not come with a film that meets the expectations. Let’s hope for the best!
SHAAPIT: Vikram Bhatt is back after the successful 1920 with another horror flick, Shaapit. It marks the acting debut of Aditya Narayan and also television actress Shweta Agarwal. Promotion could have been better but still the film has made many curious. Also it has Aditya who has a considerable fan following. Like for every other film, Shaapit needs to be well-made to get box office success. 1920 also had newcomers and it clicked wonderfully with the audience and was a hit too. And the same is expected from Shaapit too. It would definitely get the best opening out of the three!
LAHORE: This flick would definitely get the poorest opening but has high chances of being much better than the above 2 films! Surprisingly, Lahore gives a message on peace through the medium of a violent game, kickboxing! The film marks the debut of Aanaahad, who went for rigorous kickboxing training in China for 6 months for this role. Also Lahore gives viewers probably the last chance to see deceased Nirmal Pandey in theatres! The film is backed by Warner Bros and has toured numerous film festivals and has won many awards and nominations. Those not interested in LSD and Shaapit should try for Lahore!

Chandni Chowk To China, Kambakkht Ishq and ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ won the maximum awards in a recently held award function! Shocked? Don’t be ‘coz the awards recognized the worst in cinema! The Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award-MADHUR BHANDARKAR
Cyrus Broacha Memorial Award-CYRUS BROACHA
My personal favourite category is ‘Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke’ Award which was presented to Sylvester and Denise! However, the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya should not have been given to Madhur Bhandarkar. There are so many out there who deserve it badly!! Another funny thing is that Cyrus Broacha Memorial Award was given away to Cyrus himself! In his acceptance speech, he said, “It’s great. I’m thrilled. I hope to win this award every year”! Obviously, none of the film starring Cyrus featured in the awards (although one might argue that his disastrous flick Fruit N Nut should have got some award!).
Golden Kela Awards were launched last year by Random Magazine. The nominees were shortlisted by its editorial board and the winners were selected by a public poll. Needless to say, none of the winners were present in the event to take away the prized trophies!
Did you like the idea of Golden Kela Awards? Satisfied with the winners’ list? Do let me know!
Baweja won the Worst Actor award for his performance in dud What’s Your Raashee? while Kareena was adjudged Worst Actress for her role in Kambakkht Ishq.
The chief guest of the evening was Bollywood funnyman Cyrus Broacha, who was awarded the Cyrus Broacha Memorial Award.
“It’s great. I’m thrilled. I hope to win this award every year,” Cyrus said in his cheeky fashion.
Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar won the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya (Please stop its Enough) Award!, asking him to stop making films. In a great crossover moment, even Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards won the Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke (Have you gone muts) Award for participating in expensive flop Kambakkht Ishq alongside Kareena and Akshay Kumar.
The worst supporting actor (male and female) went to Ranvir Shorey and Deepika Padukone respectively for their roles in Chandni Chowk To China. While the worst film went to Kambakkht Ishq, Ashutosh Gowariker was declared worst director for What’s Your Raashee?.
The function at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi was complete with digs at actors, from old timers to the new ones.
After hearing open digs at veteran actors Rajendra Kumar, late Feroz Khan and filmmaker Yash Chopra, Cyrus said: “If we want to abuse, we should abuse everybody.”
Rahul Ram, the vocalist of popular band Indian Ocean performed a humorous take on the song Nani teri morni.. and Raat ke musafir.
Jackky Bhagnani and Shruti Haasan were declared the worst newcomer actors for their roles in Kal Kissne Dekha and Luck respectively.
Rani Mukerji-starrer Dil Bole Hadippa! was given the Most Original Story award for being copied from Hollywood’s She’s The Man while her pairing with Shahid Kapoor in the same was named the Worst Pair.
In the special award winners category were director Kabir Khan and producer Aditya Chopra who were the recipients of a Lajja (Shame) Award for the Worst Treatment of a Serious Issue in New York, Abhishek Bachchan won the Dara Singh Award for worst accent in Delhi-6.
In the same category, an Insensitivity Award went to Chandni Chowk To China while a Black Award for Emotional Blackmail went to Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Paa.
None of the stars named for the awards were present at the gala.
Launched by Random magazine last year, the gala is a spin-off on Hollywood’s Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies, which recognises the worst in cinema.
The categories and the nominees were shortlisted by the editorial board of the magazine and were selected via an online public poll on the website www.goldenkela.in.
Two of Bollywood’s biggest filmmakers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Aditya Chopra had a serious misunderstanding last year when Chopra ended up using the Punjabi exclamation ‘Hadippa’, a registered by Bhansali’s production house, for Yash Raj Films’ Dil Bole Hadippa! While the incident left a bitter taste in Bhansali’s mouth and the director had vowed to not go anywhere near the Yash Raj banner, the acrimony has now faded.
Bhansali for the first time will be shooting from February 21 at Yash Raj Studios, and that too for the crucial last schedule of the Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai starrer Guzaarish.
A source says, “It is the final lap of shooting and Sanjay needs to be absolutely relaxed. He weighed the pros and cons and decided to let bygones be bygones and approached Yash Raj. Mr Yash Chopra and his son Aditya have happily extended all facilities at their swanky studio to the director who hopes to shoot in peace and without any guests dropping in.”
“A drawback in shooting at one of the other major film studios in Mumbai is that guests can drop in any time. Despite giving clear instructions to his actors and technicians that no visitors would be allowed on the sets of Guzaarish, Sanjay regularly had to deal with VIP guests on the sets and he had to politely turn them down. At Yash Raj such intrusions are not allowed at any cost thereby saving Sanjay a lot of embarrassment,” adds the source.
Bhansali says, “I am shooting at Yash Raj later this month and it is strictly a business arrangement. The studio is comfortable and convenient. And we all belong to the same fraternity, don’t we?”
Once this schedule is complete, the director will only have to shoot some scenes with a magician and a song with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in which she will dance spontaneously, without the help of a choreographer.

Bollywood hottie’s calendar for 2010 is smokin’ hot and sinful
BINA TRIVEDI Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; February 3, 2010)
January went by in a flash (or was it a splash?), but you have the rest of the year to plan your important dates with the indiatimes.com 2010 calendar by Vector Projects (I) Pvt. Ltd. featuring Bollywood hottie and bikini babe Sherlyn Chopra.
Sherlyn, who was seen in the Shahid Kapoor-Rani Mukerji film Dil Bole Hadippa! last year, is a photographer’s delight and unarguably the hottest property on the Internet. Her rollicking stint in the Bigg Boss house last season only added to her status as the most downloaded Indian star of the net — more than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was at one time. And now she’s got a calendar of her own!
The sultry actress has sportingly made herself available as a poster girl with the indiatimes.com calendar. There are 12 stunning and exclusive pictures, shot by the likes of Bollywood’s favourite lensman Subi Samuel among others, featuring Sherlyn’s sexy 34-25-36 body in sinful and smoking hot images worthy of the best place on your wall. Priced at just Rs 199, the calendar is a steal. “It costs less than what you would pay for a multiplex ticket… and this for a year-round visual treat,” purred Sherlyn.
That is true. And Umesh Rao, Vector Projects’ CEO, was naturally delighted to be presenting the calendar. The company that believes in “Creating environments where people love to be” is a market leader in the execution of largescale interior projects on a turnkey basis. Its use of leading architects and consultants in India and abroad for the design, development and delivery of customer services has earned Vector Projects the ISO 9001:2000 certification.
Meanwhile Sherlyn, who believes “if you’ve got it — flaunt it; if not — buy it”, continues to be India’s most saleable star online. You may buy her calendar, exclusive outfits, posters and mugs on http://www.shopping. indiatimes.com. Her hot wallpapers are available on http://in.mobile.indiatimes.com. And Sherlyn’s wishlist for 2010 (“Bigger films, bigger cars, bigger house, bigger pay cheques and a bigger behind”) can be read on her Fanclub on itimes.com, (http://www.itimes.com/ sherlynchopra) Sherlyn’s pictures may also be downloaded on your mobile phone. Trade sources say that Rani Mukerji has been sending feelers to filmmakers outside of Yash Raj Films, her personal relationship with the company notwithstanding. The actress who did her last three films, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Dil Bole Hadippa with YRF, is now looking to break fresh ground with outside producers.
It is confirmed that Rani will be seen in an important role in UTV Spotboy’s No One Killed Jessica. Vidya Balan will play a role based on Sabrina Lall, Jessica’s sister, while Rani will reportedly essay the role of a journalist who was instrumental in having this sensitive case re-opened. Directed by Rajkumar Gupta, who directed Aamir, the film will go on the floors mid-February.
The reason why Rani apparently greenlighted this project is because she was thrilled with the aspect of doing a thriller. And, No One Killed Jessica, is a fast-paced flick set in the hub of political power, New Delhi.
Sources from the production company are hesitant to talk about the plot, but insiders say that Rani was excited when they told her that this film offers ample scope for the two lead actresses who, in their relentless pursuit for justice, mobilise the entire nation.
Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV says, “When you have actors like Rani and Vidya by your side, the joy of creating characters that can shake the audience and leave an impact is immense.’’
