Where does our male superstars’ obsession with young co-stars leave our just-arrived debutants?

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; February 15, 2013)

So Salman’s found a new face opposite him for Sohail Khan’s film while SRK is hunting for one for Farah Khan’s next. Rumours are also abuzz that Nawab Saif Ali Khan is also looking for a fresh face for his home production. So what happened to Diana Penty who debuted in his home production, Cocktail, just last year? Last season’s flavour? Maybe yes.

2012 saw the grand debut of as many as a dozen newbies. But only a handful of them have any films on their plates this year. So why are our 40- something A-list male superstars so fussy about their co-stars’ age? Is it because of their insecurity about looking older or is it the fear of being overshadowed? After all, their A-list female counterparts too have their platter laden with too many meaty projects. Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Sonakshi Sinha, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma have no dates to spare for the entire year.

Tricks of the trade

Trade experts attribute this to a couple of factors. First of all, the lack of top actresses in Bollywood right now.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “Kareena is already married and Priyanka is very busy. Sonakshi has already done two to three films with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Stars prefer to go for new girls who bring freshness to the project.” This is the reason that every year sees the influx of three to four More >

Salman Khan to romance Diana Penty in Radhe?

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 25, 2012)

After an impressive debut in Saif Ali Khan’s Cocktail, Diana Penty seems to be moving up the ladder. If everything falls in place, she will soon be seen romancing Salman Khan. Mirr o rlearnt that Diana will play the leading lady in Sohail Khan’s directorial project, tentatively titled Radhe.

A source said, “Sohail is busy preparing for the venture. The script is getting fine tuned every day and needs someone relatively fresh with an innocent face who could also display maturity of character.” And that’s why the filmmaker thought of Diana, who in her debut film pulled off the character of the sweet and emotional Meera with ease.

“Sohail got in touch with a common friend and initiated a meeting with Diana. The first chat went very well and they have been in touch since then. Diana likes the role and is now in advanced talks with the filmmaker. However, since its year-end right now and Sohail will also get busy with the New Year celebrations with his family, the final formalities will only take place at the beginning of the New Year,” the source added.

According to our source, the film is expected to go on floors in May 2013.

Arjun-Diana arm twist channel for giving them award?

MID-DAY (December 7, 2012)

The famous adage goes — everything comes at a price.

Well, in the case of one- filmolds Arjun Kapoor and Diana Penty, it is the ‘prize’ that ultimately matters! Our sources say that the spokespersons of the two actors turned down media requests for the actors’ bytes in regards to an awards event, until and unless the two were actually picked to win. A source says, “Unlike in the past, nowadays it’s an actor’s manager who handles his or her life. That’s very sad! The request for bytes came from the same channel that is actually organizing this awards gala.” Another source, who was present when the incident panned out, says, “Arjun and Diana had been nominated in the newcomer category at the event. When a channel called the actors’ managers for media bytes, they were unceremoniously turned down.” Apparently Arjun and Diana would only open their mouths if they actually won the award. Phew!

Jigar Shah (MID-DAY; December 7, 2012)

Akshay Kumar may have stopped working with Priyanka Chopra ever since they were linked and Akki’s biwi Twinkle sounded a red alert.

But pairing up with her cousin Parineeti seems to be okay for Akshay Kumar.

The Ishaqzaade actress has been confirmed to star opposite the Khiladi in A R Murugadoss’ Hindi remake of the Tamil action thriller Thuppakki being produced by Vipul Shah. The original features Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal.

Says a source, “Of late, Akshay has been working with newer actresses like Sonakshi Sinha in Rowdy Rathore and Anushka Sharma in Patiala House. So this time he will team up with another youngster Parineeti.

According to B-Town buzz names like Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif were being considered.

But a source close to Murugadoss informs,  Parineeti has been confirmed for the role. Priyanka has no clue about it!” South director Murgadoss made his B-Town entry with the Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini in 2008.

Priyanka’s win, Parineeti’s loss

It is also rumoured that Parineeti was angling for the role of Mary Kom in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production directed by Omung Kumar Bundela. But her cousin Priyanka Chopra bagged the role.

PENTY of rumours

Cocktail actress Diana Penty was initially considered for the Hindi remake of Thuppakki. However when Akshay Kumar learnt that Diana was from the same agency with which Akshay had a problem with, he refused to work with her. It may be recalled that Nargis Fakhri was signed for More >

Diana Penty turns down 40 lakh first stage performance offer?

0

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; November 27, 2012)

Diana Penty, who made her B-Town debut in Cocktail opposite Saif Ali Khan, was recently approached by an event agency for her first stage performance. The model-turned-actress was requested to perform to her film’s tracks — Tumhi Ho Bandhu and Daaru Desi — at an upcoming awards gala.

She was apparently offered Rs 40 lakh for the show that the organisers claimed was the highest amount offered to any debutant for a stage act.

However, according to the sources Diana turned down the offer! Says a source, “ As she was contractually obligated to attend a brand event during the same time frame, there was no way she could have accepted it. Diana wouldn’t have had any time to rehearse for it. She had to decline the offer as she wanted her first appearance on stage to be perfect and needed time to rehearse which she would have been unable to during the same duration.”

Adds the source, “Diana was extremely keen on making her debut in a stage show. She has always enjoyed dancing and is a trained Kathak dancer.” Diana who has yet to sign her second B-Town outing meanwhile keeps busy with her endorsement deals. With awards events getting underway in January, she is among the contenders for the Best Debutant award.

Buzz is that after she demanded a whopping Rs 2 crore for endorsing a hair care product, the ‘Cocktail’ actress was promptly dropped from the ad

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; August 25, 2012)

She may be just one-film old, but looks like Diana Penty has already decided to act pricey in the industry. No wonder that she demanded a bomb to endorse a hair care product. Not happy with her act, the company promptly dropped her like a piece of hot coal.

Our source says, “Diana is said to be receiving several ad offers after her debut film. A month ago, one such endorsement deal came her way from a big hair care brand. The company was keen to have Diana on board, but it was strange that even after having a chat with her representatives, they could not get a proper confirmation from her end.”

Apparently, Diana reverted to them after a month and quoted a whopping fee of Rs two crore. The source adds, “Finally, the brand had to drop the idea of signing her as the amount she demanded was too high.” Currently, the brand is said to be looking for other options. Diana remained unavailable for comment.

Farhan Akhtar, John Abraham and Saif’s business partner take a cue from YRF, float talent management companies

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 14, 2012)

Since finding talent isn’t easy, nurturing newcomers and even managing their future has become a norm in the film industry. In the lines of Yash Raj Films’ 3-film-deals and Karan Johar’s coterie of assistants-turned-directors, John Abraham too had started managing the careers of two newcomers Ayushmaan Khurrana and Yami Gautam. A few days ago, Saif Ali Khan’s business partner Dinesh Vijan took the leap as well and started off a talent management division. This Illuminati Films division, a brain child of Vijan, is spear headed by Sharada Karki. Diana Penty, who debuted with their production Cocktail was Vijan’s first pupil. And now, Mirror has learnt that Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani have joined the bandwagon. They will manage not only film deals of newcomers but also oversee their commercial assignments and public appearances.

Reluctant to give away the names of the three youngsters they’ve signed, a source from Excel Entertainment confirmed, “Yes, Farhan and Ritesh have signed up three newcomers for the Talent Division they have started. This will be a full-fledged section of Excel Entertainment, which would be separate from filmmaking.”

Apparently, launching a talent wing was Farhan and Ritesh’s brainchild. Seeing the emerging trend followed by most production houses, the friends decided to start one of More >

How to exude Zen-like calm even around pesky visitors is the best lesson actor Deepika Padukone taught Mirror reader Insiyah Contractor

Anand Holla (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 12, 2012)

Landing smack in the middle of a marathon TV interview session was something Insiyah Contractor had not signed up for when she dashed out of her South Mumbai home to meet her favourite star at Bandra’s Mehboob Studio. Once she had braved the rains to get there, for the next two hours, the 20-year-old mass media graduate sat at shouting distance from her idol, driven to despair by the wait. “How does she manage to answer all those stupid, unnecessary questions with such calm? I’m getting impatient just watching her,” Contractor said.

Ten metres away, Deepika Padukone was far from flustered — or she’s a good actor. Even a dozen television interviews later, the actress was upbeat, her smile just as sparkling as she sat in a sheer white tank top and tie-n-dye jeans. During breaks, she got her make-up touched up, checked if her messy fishtail plait was still messy, sent a few text messages and sipped on water from a straw stuck to a mini Bisleri bottle. “A straw so that she doesn’t smudge her lipstick, right?” Contractor smiled.

As the crowd thinned out, Padukone greeted her fan warmly, apologizing for the wait. Buzzing with nervous excitement, Contractor shot off the mandatory ‘I’m-your-die-hard-fan’ line before flipping out a notebook where she had jotted down questions. “If you threw a crazy More >

Asira Tarannum (MID-DAY; August 8, 2012)

Looks like Ayushmann Khurrana is on a roll. The actor, who shot to sudden fame post Vicky Donor, has signed a new film with Kunal Kohli. Sources say that the film is a romantic comedy but further details are yet to be revealed. Ayushmann confirms, “I am excited to start work with Kunal.”

Our source adds, “Given Ayushmann’s popularity, Kunal apparently is looking to cast an A-list actress opposite the actor. The filmmaker is apparently considering Diana Penty and Ileana D’Cruz for a role opposite him.”

In the meanwhile, Ayushmann is currently busy shooting for Rohan Sippy’s next. The shoot schedule is half done and is expected to get over by next month, post which Kunal’s film will go on the floors in London.

Diana Penty is afraid of Randeep Hooda

The actress talks about why she hit the panic button while filming with her ‘Cocktail’ co-star

Jigar Shah (MID-DAY; July 28, 2012)

This actress is always quick to press the panic button. In fact Diana Penty has had a couple of episodes where she may have over-reacted a bit. As a first-time actor, it’s understandable that Diana may have had misgivings about facing the camera. But she apparently was also scared of her co-star Randeep Hooda!

Randeep, who plays her husband in Cocktail, is portrayed as a foul-mouthed and aggressive character. Diana says, “I was very scared. He was real while doing those violent scenes. So much so that all the expressions that you see on my face were for real. I didn’t even need to put on an act.”

Another episode actually involves some rather enthusiastic fans. Diana recalls, “I had gone to watch the film with my friends. On my way out, some guys suddenly, rushed toward me. I began screaming in fear. I was later told that they just wanted a photograph with me.” Phew!
