Kiran Rao takes the ramp for a cause

Shubha Shetty (MID-DAY; March 15, 2013)

The upcoming Fashion Week will see an unlikely candidate walk the ramp. The model in question is Kiran Rao and this would be the first time she has undertaken such an assignment.

Apart from Kiran, the fashion show will also have Dino Morea and Nandita Mahtani walk the ramp together–an indication they are finally in a mood to acknowledge their long-standing relationship.

But, it isn’t without reason these celebrities have decided to walk the walk. All this is for Ronnie Screwvala’s Swades Foundation – an NGO that works for rural empowerment.

Designer Vikram Phadnis, in collaboration with the foundation, travelled to rural areas of Maharashtra like Raigad and Ratnagiri and took inspirationfrom the rustic fashion and it is the collection based on this that the celebrities will be wearing during the show

Joining Kiran, Nandita and Dino will be the likes of Deepika Padukone, Ekta Kapoor, Jeetendra, Farah Khan, Dia Mirza, Rahul Bose, Vaibhavi Merchant, Sanjay Khan, Chetan Bhagat and the Kai Po Che team including Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Raj Kumar Yadav.

Mohit Suri gets married to Udita Goswami

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; January 30, 2013)

Filmmaker Mohit Suri (of Woh Lamhe and Murder 2 fame) finally tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend, actress Udita Goswami at Juhu’s ISKCON temple on Tuesday.

The duo fell in love at the launch party of the film Zeher in Goa way back in 2005 and has survived many break-ups.

While Udita’s parents came from Nepal to attend the wedding, Mohit’s uncles Mahesh Bhatt, Mukesh Bhatt , sister Smiley Suri and cousins Vishesh Bhatt, Emran Hashmi were also there to bless the couple.

The guest list included Dia Mirza, Jacqueline Fernandez, Tanushree Dutta, Kangna Ranaut, Ken Ghosh, Shaad Randhawa, Suneel Darshan, Ramesh Taurani, Tanuj Garg, Rohit Roy, Anurag Basu, Shraddha Kapoor, Kunal Deshmukh and Vishal Mahadkar among others.

It was a traditional Indian wedding with the blushing bride dressed in a red lehenga and the groom looking dapper in a white kurta-pyjama with a black jacket. However, Mohit was heard complaining about the ‘uncomfortable’ pink turban and wished the grooms were saved from such ‘tortures’, but all in good humour. The platter was an elaborate but vegetarian one. After the rituals, the guests moved to a popular subarban night club. Earlier the Mehendi ceremony was held at Mohit’s sister Smiley’s residence on Monday. The reception will be held at the Mahalakshmi Race Course on January 31.

Dia Mirza geared up for a busy, fruitful 2013

The actress who celebrated her birthday yesterday is geared up for 2013 with many plans, including starting her own foundation

Deepali Dhingra (MID-DAY; December 10, 2012)

What better way to bring in the New Year with hopes to make a difference in the lives of the lesser privileged? And Dia Miarza is doing just that. Dia is planning to set up her own foundation sometime next year. “What I hope to do is to be a facilitator to smaller NGOs,” she says. And the causes that she wishes to take up? “Anything from children’s education to environment to spreading awareness about cancer,” says the actress.

The lukewarm response to her maiden production Love Breakups Zindagi has done nothing to dampen the actress’ enthusiasm for producing movies. The next year will see her and co-producers Saahil Sangha and Zayed Khan announce their next venture. “We’re working on four scripts at the moment and by February next year, we should be able to make an announcement,” says Dia.

For Dia, who celebrated her birthday yesterday, 2012 was a year of preparation. “There were lots of things I had to step away from to make way for the new. Next year is going to be about realising the fruits of the labour,” says Dia. She also received accolades for her debut in a Bengali film Paanch Adhyay. “There have been lots of offers from regional cinema after that, but honestly, I’ve not been able to pay much attention to them because I’ve been so focused on my in-house productions,” she says.

Language eventually is no barrier-Dia Mirza

Dia Mirza on her latest Bengali release ‘Paanch Adhay’ and stepping out of her comfort zone

Kunal M Shah (MID-DAY; October 27, 2012)

Over the years, several stars from Bollywood have tried their hand at Bengali cinema. And Dia Mirza is happy that the industry there has perceived her as someone who has perfected the Bengali accent on the big screen.

Speaking about her recent Bengali release Paanch Adhyay, the actress says, “Paanch Adhyay has taught me to embrace a challenge in a whole new manner. Bengali isn’t my first language. The Bangla film industry and the culture were fairly alien to me and yet the script and the director were calling out to me.

My hunch… my recognition of what may be a rewarding risk to take has only got better. The film allows me once again to believe in what has always been the key to an engaging film a good simple story that is relevant, real and poignant.”

Dia, who is half-Bengali by birth, feels that language is no impediment when it comes to cinema. The actress says, “Language eventually is no barrier, if the craft of the storyteller is sound. Then he or she will capture your imagination. I can see that the Bengali film industry is succeeding in doing so at an increasing rate.”

Post her film Kahaani, Vidya Balan’s popularity in Kolkata has just been on the rise. In fact, the actress had marked her big screen debut with the Bengali film Bhalo Theko. No wonder that a pujo pandal in Kolkata adorned the actress’ photograph in all the fineries More >

Rani Mukerji’s Durga Puja gets bigger, better

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 20, 2012)

It’s a tradition Rani Mukerji has been following for the past many years. And with the shift in venue to Tulip Star in Juhu, the Mukerji family’s Durga Puja has only become bigger and better.

This year being the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the iconic Belur Math has been recreated at the venue as part of the theme. Elaborate celebrations have been planned, starting Saturday, October 19.

A source told Mirror, “The night after the music launch of her upcoming film, Talaash, Rani personally went and checked all the preparations and security. Earlier, the puja would take place at Balkanji Bari ground in Juhu but that proved too small for the huge crowd that turned up. Tulip Star is a bigger venue and gives the family the comfort and facility of adequate space for car parking.”

Day one will see a cultural programme being put up by some of the family members. The source revealed they’ve been rehearsing for it at Bappi Lahiri’s house for some time. On day two, there will be a live performance by Hema Malini while Pritam and Kailash Kher will perform on the third and fourth day, respectively.

Said our source, “Rani is looking forward to the celebrations. The likes of Bappi Lahiri, Ashutosh Gowarikar and his wife, Anurag Basu and family, Shaan, Dia Mirza, Bipasha Basu, Sharbani (Ayan Mukerji’s sister) and Vaibhavi Merchant will attend the pooja.”

Nawazuddin collides with Dia Mirza at Chittagong premiere

Shaheen Parkar (MID-DAY; October 5, 2012)

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s B-Town ride may finally be smooth sailing after years. However the actor’s red carpet appearances seem far from it.

The Kahaani and Gangs of Wasseypur star collided with Dia Mirza on the red carpet of a magazine awards event recently.

Says an onlooker, “Dia arrived first on the red carpet. After posing for snapshots and giving news bytes, she moved away only to have Nawaz do a collision course. He walked straight into her! Perhaps there was something on his mind or he was so distracted that he did not see Dia.”

Adds the onlooker, “Nawaz was obviously taken aback by his oops moment and extended a hand to the actress.

And it was probably the longest handshake in B-Town! Nawaz did not let go off her hand right through their conversation.” Nawaz who bagged the Breakthrough Talent of the Year award at the event seemed to have done his own breakthrough on the red carpet!

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 18, 2012)

Friday afternoon, noted cinematographer Ashok Mehta’s last rites were performed at the Santacruz crematorium, Mumbai. Mehta, who passed away on August 15 at the Kokilaben Hospital began his last journey from his home in Andheri. And many from the film industry walked with him. Among them were Arjun Rampal, Priyanka Chopra, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Shashi Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Subhash Ghai, Farah Khan, Govind Nihalani, Danny Denzongpa and many more.

Shah Rukh Khan, who worked with Mehta during Chalte Chalte and Trimurti apart from the many ad campaigns was the last person to enter. He came directly to the crematorium around 2.30 pm.

Rampal, who considered Mehta his mentor, told Mirror, “He was a great influence in my life. In fact, he had touched almost everyone’s heart in the industry. SRK, for one, was very close to him. Many confided in him about their personal ups and downs and he reposed their faith. He was a complete fighter. He came from a humble background and took the industry by storm.

Everybody I met at the crematorium today, I realised that I known them because of Mehta. Itna strong influence tha unka industry pe. That shows the positivity the man exuded.”

Rajesh Mapuskar’s big night graced by hometown friends

Except for Aamir Khan, most of Chopra’s friends could not make it to the premiere

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; June 16, 2012)

Three years ago, the premiere of Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films’ 3 Idiots had the who’s who of the Hindi film industry in full attendance. By contrast, the 2012 premiere of Rajesh Mapuskar’s Ferrari Ki Sawaari turned out to be a rather dull affair, with several stars who have worked with the production house away from the city, busy shooting for their projects.

However, Aamir Khan, whose biggest hit has been with VVC Films, lit up the atmosphere when he walked in to congratulate the team. An eyewitness present at the event told Mirror, “The premiere suddenly became lively when Aamir entered but within 45 minutes, we saw him leaving the venue.” We hear the actor has already seen the film.

Incidentally, the premiere was specially held for Mapuskar’s family, friends and acquaintances from his hometown Shriwardhan in Konkan. And, nearly four to five bus loads of villagers, including Mapuskar’s entire family, attended the event.

Sharman Joshi shone the brightest as he came in, dressed in a black jodhpuri, with his entire family. On Wednesday, a premiere was also held at a single-screen theatre in Delhi and L K Advani graced the event.

A source close to VVC Films revealed, “Vidhu was a little upset that the actors who have worked with him were not present. But he was aware they were away shooting. Sanjay Dutt was in Jaipur shooting for his next. Vidya More >
