Currently designing her outfits in two films, Rascals and Tez, Kangna Ranaut plans to launch her own line of clothes soon
Designers pay heed to this. A film that stars Kangna Ranaut in future may not require your services because the actress has decided to design her own clothes. As of now, Kangna is designing her own clothes in two films that she signed recently. And the actress is likely to launch her own line of clothes after that.
The films in question are David Dhawan’s Rascals (produced by Sanjay Dutt) and Priyadarshan’s Tez (earlier titled Bullet Train and produced by Ratan Jain).
Sources close to Rascals say that some designers, including Anaita Shroff, were shortlisted for the project, but things did not materialise due to budget and date issues. Anaita denies it however and says, “I didn’t sign Rascals.
I had date problems since I’m working at that time on Abbas Mustan’s The Italian Job. There was no question of any budget issues.”
Fair enough. But David Dhawan apparently did tell Kangna that she should take a call on her clothes. Says a source, “Dhawan is quite impressed by Kangna’s sense of dressing. And so is Priyadarshan.” So are we by the way!
Not so long ago, Paris Hilton had asked Kangna to be the face of her fashion brand in Asia. Impressed by Kangna’s refreshing approach to fashion, she had approached her with the request to become the brand ambassador for her line of clothing.

So, the candidate is surely more than eligible. As for logistics, a friend of Kangna’s tells Mumbai Mirror, “Fashion designers are given a budget and then they pick up clothes from India and abroad keeping the amount in mind.
Kangna too will adhere to this style of costume design. Besides, she travels a lot on shoots. So, going to places to shop is not a problem.”
Sounds like a fabulous idea.
We give you a blow-by-blow account of all that happened at Salman Khan’s Dabangg success party
While a good majority of the industry stayed away from Sallu’s bash, it did turn out to be a heady mix of celebrities, some clad in their snazzy cocktail outfits and of course, Sallu standing out ever so stylishly in his casual t-shirt and jeans.
Aamir’s sweet gesture
While host Sallu made a late entry himself, Aamir Khan, who recently returned from Toronto, came over (looking a tad out of place however in a bowtie and a suit) to wish Salman for his success.

Sonu-Sallu swappy story
The highlight of the evening was an oddly cute interaction between Sallu and Sonu Sood. Imagine a comic strip and here’s a chronological lowdown of what transpired. 1. Salman hugged Sonu and said that he wanted to do something for him. 2. Instinctively, Sallu removed the watch from his wrist and gave it to Sonu. 3. An overwhelmed Sonu thought of returning the gesture but proved to be a little unimaginative; he removed his watch to give it to Salman. 4. While initially refusing Sonu’s watch, Sallu finally took it and kept it in his pocket. 5. Sallu then took it out again and put it in Sonu’s pocket. 6. “This is its rightful place,” Sallu then told Sonu. 7. A touched Sonu hugged him tight. And they lived happily ever after.
Shirish bored without booze
Among Salman’s close friends present at the party were David Dhawan, Subhash Ghai, Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder. After greeting others, Shirish made no qualms about admitting that he was feeling bored at the party. Reason? He said he had quit drinking and hence no longer knew what to do at a party anymore. Director Subhash Ghai was the last to land up at the party but was seen hobnobbing with Aamir for quite some time. Comeback, Mr Ghai?
Where’s the heroine?
Surprisingly, Sonakshi Sinha came in well past midnight. Her mother Punam Sinha and brother Kush were already present at the party when she entered. But we must add, she looked rather dapper in her multi-coloured short dress, with the khaandani high cheekbones definitely adding to the oomph factor.
Meeting the Kashyaps
Abhinav Kashyap entered hand-in-hand with his father and bonded for a long time with Arbaaz Khan. Anurag Kashyap came in his trademark blazer and jeans but sans girlfriend Kalki this time. The father-son pair looked cute together, especially after news of Anurag leaving his parents’ home to make his Bollywood career, had been doing the rounds.
As always, the after-party moved to Salman’s Bandra residence later and continued till the wee hours of the morning. Stars mingling in their own ‘Galaxy’…

Salman, who had reportedly had a fallout both with David Dhawan and Govinda, is now working on the nearly-shelved project Partner 2
After much turmoil, David Dhawan’s Partner 2 is back on track. You heard it. Salman Khan and Govinda will play the leads. David Dhawan will direct the film and Sohail Khan will produce it. And the most interesting bit is that this news coincides with the huge box-office success of Dabangg (check out our report on page 25).
Partner 2 was supposed to go on floors over a year ago but after Salman Khan’s relationship with both Govinda and David Dhawan reportedly went sour, the project was as good as shelved. It is only now that things are beginning to look up.
Not too long ago, it was reported that Salman had developed serious issues with both Govinda and Dhawan. Govinda was miffed that Salman had not lived up to his promise of helping him launch his daughter Narmada. Instead, Salman had gotten busy shooting for Dabangg and was concentrating on promoting Sonakshi Sinha (Mumbai Mirror, August 20)
The revival of Partner 2 clearly implies that Salman has patched up with both Dhawan and Govinda. Does this mean that Narmada will soon make her first Bollywood splash now? We’ll wait and watch.
The Salman-Dhawan fallout was widely reported in November 2009. It mentioned that Salman, who was once at the helm of his career because of hits with Dhawan like Biwi No. 1, no longer wanted the director to make Sajid Nadiadwala’s film, Sanki.
This was apparently because he was upset with Dhawan for not giving much attention to Partner 2 and instead working on Hook Ya Crook.
But that’s an old story now. Hook Ya Crook is stuck in its final stages. And more importantly, Sallu is on a new high with Dabangg having hit a jackpot at the box office. So, the resurrection of Partner 2 is obviously timed superbly well for Salman.
Confirming the story, a source close to Partner 2 says, “Sanjay Chhel is writing this film. I will mount the sets next year.”
But what remains to be seen is whether Katrina, who played the female lead in Partner, is re-cast in Partner 2.
When asked about the fallout with Salman, Dhawan told Mumbai Mirror yesterday evening, “Oh, that is all bakwaas. I have just come out from Salman’s house. Right now, Salman will be working on Bigg Boss 4. Then, he has Bodyguard. And only after that Partner 2 will start, sometime next year. And yes, Salman and Govinda are both doing the film. The rest of the cast is yet not decided.”
What’s decided though is that friends who had once turned foe are back together.

Over the week gone by, there have been speculations galore around the latest movie being signed by Akshay Kumar. It is being whispered in the industry circles that the actor has signed a film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Prabhu Deva would be calling the shots as a director. It was also being assumed that with Bhansali around, the film would have a period setting and due to Prabhu Deva’s inclination towards dance, the film would require some intense Indian classical dancing by Akshay Kumar.
We bring to you the real truth exclusively at Bollywood Hungama.
Yes, it is confirmed that Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Prabhu Deva would be collaborating for a film. The film would be co-produced by Bhansali and Akshay while Prabhu Deva would be directing his second Hindi film after Wanted.
However, the speculation around this being a period dance drama is incorrect. The film is being set in the modern times and has a contemporary feel to it. Also, dance would form one of the many ingredients of this hardcore commercial masala flick which would go on floors early next year once Akshay Kumar wraps up the shoot of Desi Boyz [to be directed by Rohit Dhawan - son of David Dhawan].
Confirms a highly placed source connected to the film, “That’s right, this is going to be the most ambitious project ever by Bhansali. It was him who thought of bringing together Akshay Kumar and Prabhu Deva. He has been known for certain aesthetics of cinema and that would remain intact in this new venture as well. However, this time around the target audience would be a wider segment of masses. Bhansali wanted to expand his horizon and conceived a mega project like this.”
“For Akshay too, it is all set to be a new experience because he has established himself amidst the top league without working with filmmakers like Chopras, Johars and Bhansalis of the world. A project like this adds on a reputed filmmaker to his repertoire”, he adds, “Since Prabhu Deva too has shown his commercial bent with Wanted, his coming together with Akshay only makes this a killer combination in the making. One can well imagine the kind of hype that just this announcement is going to make.”
This yet untitled film doesn’t have a leading lady finalised yet. However, given the huge canvas that this film is expected to boast of, it is imperative that one of the top actresses would come on board. Would Bhansali be repeating Aishwarya Rai or Sonam? Or would Kareena, Katrina or Deepika make the cut?

Priyanka Chopra has done around 30 films in her seven year long career so far. In this stint of hers, she has come up with several successful films. These could have belonged to drama or comedy genre with a couple of them even bringing the sensual side of her. However, an unspoken fact about her filmography is that she has never worked in a quintessential romantic musical ever where she would have played her age.
Says an industry observer, “It is tough to believe but if one actually goes through the list of films that she has done, it is actually a fact. Yes, she has worked in hit films but they have mostly been dramas (Fashion, Kaminey, Andaaz, Waqt, Aitraaz). A few of them have been rom-coms (Mujhse Shaadi Karogi) or action (Don, Krrish) but a young love story has always eluded her. Anjaana Anjaani is the first time ever when she is getting into a lovey-dovey mode.
Apparently, Priyanka too is aware about this fact and doesn’t have any qualms admitting that. Says director Siddharth Anand who managed to introduce a new zone to Priyanka, “She actually knows that she has never done a love story over all these years. I guess for both of us it has turned out to be pretty good situation as now we can promise a different facet of her acting capabilities and personality to the audience.”
In fact so attached was Priyanka to the film that she involved herself into the making of the film in a big way. Says a highly placed unit member who saw Priyanka’s progress right through the making of Anjaana Anjaani, “Actors do come up with suggestions and carry a certain point of view, especially so when they are successful and have made a place for themselves in the industry. In fact it is appreciated as well because they have gathered good knowledge about the medium of cinema and hence their inputs are most welcome. However, the vigour with which Priyanka was making contributions to Anjaana Anjaani was amazing. It was clear that she wanted to participate in the capacity of much more than just an actor.”
Siddharth’s acknowledgment for his leading lady’s efforts are understandable. After all when he announced the ‘jodi’ of Priyanka and Ranbir, there were murmurs around the untried pairing. However, he trusted his vision, went on to shoot Anjaana Anjaani and wrapped it up in quick time post which he designed a few striking promos that caught everyone’s attention.
“It was a mini battle that I was fighting and though in my mind I knew that I had won it, I wanted audience to announce their verdict. For that, it was very important that the theatrical and song promos worked”, reflects Siddharth, “Fortunately for me, the response was stupendous all over which made me finally believe that I had won the battle. Now it’s time to win the war with film closing in for release.”
Though producer Sajid Nadiadwala wasn’t present on the sets during day to day filming of Anjaana Anjaani, he is well aware about Priyanka going an extra mile to make her first ever love story materialise into a quality product in a big way.
“Yes, Siddharth has told me about the ways Priyanka was passionate about her role and the film”, says Sajid, “I had a sense though that she was made for the big league when she worked for my Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. It was just her sixth film but she wasn’t nervous at all despite a set up that comprised of Salman (Khan), Akshay (Kumar) and David (Dhawan). Today she has reached an enviable position and is an original rock star that we have. It was just right for her to be seen in a romantic musical after all.”
Like Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji, Kangna Ranaut too is no longer a part of Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children
Casting for the screen adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Children, is getting tough for Deepa Mehta. On August 10, a jubilant Deepa Mehta had told Mumbai Mirror, “Yes, Kangna Ranaut has agreed to be part of Midnight’s Children. I think she’s a wonderful actress, not quite like anyone else that I’ve worked with.” This period of bliss however, was a short-lived one for Deepa. Kangna, who was to play Emerald’s character in the film, has quit the project.
A source says, “Kangna did not have dates. She is very busy with Dhamaal 2, which goes on floors very soon.
Then she will do Salman Khan’s film, which will be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. Besides these two, she has David Dhawan’s Rascals, Priyadarshan’s Bullet Train, Pritish Nandy’s Actor with Amitabh Bachchan, No Problem, Tanu Weds Manu and Knockout. The main clash on dates was happening with Rascals.”
Not so long ago, Rani Mukerji had walked out from the same film since she didn’t want to play the role of a mother to a 14-year old (Mumbai Mirror, January 29). Vidya Balan, who was also offered a role in the film, did not take it up.
But Deepa is very disappointed about Kangna not doing her film. Deepa apparently told a friend, “There were second and third choices for other characters. For Emerald I only wanted Kangna.”
Aw! Any second thoughts Kangna?
Kangna Ranaut, who refuses to be typecast, is having fun with her multiple roles
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; August 29, 2010)
She’s arrives at a five-star hotel coffee shop dressed casually in a pair of skin-fitting blue jeans and a matching blouse. Her curly hair and her large, foreversearching-for-something-brown-eyes give her the quality of a child-woman. Kangna Ranaut is an interesting mix of innocence and equanimity.
Life is currently “very good’’ to her. Her slate is choc-o-bloc. Post the supersuccess of Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai for which she won accolades for her role as a yesteryear actress, it’s raining films and assorted roles in her backyard.
Says Kangna, “I don’t think any other actress in Bollywood has as many films as I do.’’ But, hello, she is not being immodest. In the next six months she has four films slated for the marquee. And unlike many actresses who are content to be typecast, Kangna is fortunate to have a wide array of roles to bite into. In October she’ll be in Sohail Maklai’s racy thriller Knockout with Sanjay Dutt and Irrfan Khan where she plays a journalist. Then there’s Tanu weds Manu where she plays a wannabe girl from small town Kanpur. But, of course, the high point of her career is producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Game where this 23-year-old plays an Interpol officer.
“It is by far the most difficult role I’ve attempted,’’ says Kangna. “It was challenging to prepare for this role of a British girl from London who is actually quite like a man in many ways,’’ she says. The reason why she found this role so hard to prepare for is because she had no reference point of a girl who has stayed in London and speaks with a Brit accent. Having said that, the mountain beauty drops a bomb. She confesses that she has seen precisely six-seven Hollywood films in her entire life, and around 25 odd Bollywood films.
“So it wasn’t as if I knew a lot about FBI agents or CIA officials,’’ she points out. “And officers on special duty in our Hindi cinema are very different from their foreign counterparts. Abhinay Deo, the director of Game, helped me a lot by breaking the role down for me so I could interpret it correctly.’’
Kangna says Excel Entertainment (Ritesh and Farhan) were actually toying with the idea of getting a guy for this role. “However, they felt that a guy chasing a guy thing didn’t have that much of a novelty, so they changed it and I’m fortunate that they got me to do the role instead. I had to make sure that I got the body language perfect. There is nothing romantic or sensual about this Interpol officer. Yet my director didn’t want to go overboard with the stiffness and appear like too masculine. Believe me, it was a challenge. And Game is a film that I just enjoyed preparing for. It’s a never-been-seen before character as far as Bollywood goes.’’
It doesn’t stop there. While her contemporaries are falling over each other trying to grab films, Kangna’s booked way for the next year having signed on Priyadarshan’s Hindi adaptation of the Bullet Train; Indra Kumar’s comedy Double Dhamaal; David Dhawan’s Rascals; and, a film with debutant Chiraag Paswan. “Then I have been reading scripts and considering a few more projects. But now dates are an issue because I have signed on a lot of films and all are good,’’ she shrugs. What does one say? Get ready for a Kangna Ranaut film festival. For her the game has just begun.
That Salman Khan is making all efforts to promote Sonakshi Sinha and not his daughter Narmada (as he had promised once) has irked Govinda a lot
Salman Khan and Govinda have had a fall-out. Once thick as thieves, they are hardly on talking terms anymore. Reason: Salman’s keen interest in Sonakshi Sinha’s career.
Govinda is miffed that Salman has not lived up to his promise of helping him to launch his daughter Narmada.
A source says, “Narmada is as beautiful and talented as Sonakshi. Last year, Salman was very much involved with grooming Narmada. However, after he started shooting for Dabangg, he has eyes and ears for Sonakshi and not Narmada.”
Govinda may be a disgruntled dad but will not be vocal about it at all, feels the source. After Salman gave him a new lease of life by asking David Dhawan to cast him in Partner (2007), Govinda has grown immensely respectful of Salman.
|Narmada with Govinda|
Apparently, a lot has changed with time. Partner 2 (the sequel which was planned earlier) has not gone on floors yet. And under ideal circumstances, Narmada would have been shooting for at least one film by now, the way Sonakshi is. And Govinda is now making his displeasure apparent. “Dono ke beech Sonakshi ko lekar problem zaroor hai,” adds the source, referring to Govinda and Salman and the fact that Sallu is making all efforts for Sonakshi and is completely ignoring Narmada.
There was a time when Govinda used to frequent Salman’s house, Galaxy Apartments at Bandstand. Not anymore. After working on Partner, both actors were almost inseparable and loved being with each other, be it at home or even in autorikshaws, out for a spin in the middle of the night.
Govinda was unavailable for comment. On Saturday, we texted the story to Narmada and asked her to connect us to her father. She shot back saying, “He is in Manali. I will connect you to him after two days when he returns.” We waited for two days and then called her again yesterday. She answered the phone with a “Hello,” but the moment we introduced ourselves, she hung up. All our calls thereafter were unanswered.
Is Narmada building bridges between daddy and Sallu uncle?
Ravi Baswani was a rare talent. I remember being in the pre-production stage of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, scouting for actors. That’s when I saw a play called Vallabhpur Ki Roopkatha at Prithvi in 1982, in which Ravi acted. I had already watched Chashme Buddoor and was hugely impressed by Ravi’s performance. But the play reconfirmed my belief that Ravi would be lucky for Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.
Then he was living in an apartment called Tudor in Santacruz East, which had developed a cult status for struggling talent in Bollywood: Alok Nath, Rakesh Bedi, David Dhawan were all residing there. I went over to that apartment. I wasn’t expecting Ravi to accept the film but I knew that he was struggling despite the success of Chashme Buddoor.
Working with Ravi and Naseer was like magic. Ravi brought to life a theory I had conjured about directing comedy. I called it the ‘comic cement’. If one actor has it in him, the other will follow. In this case, I always believe that it was Ravi Baswani whose stellar performance goaded Naseer to shine as well, for Naseer I never thought of as an out-and-out comic actor. Ravi though was.
At a pre-release screening of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, famed playwright Vijay Tendulkar told me that it was Ravi’s stupendous performance that stood out. And it was true. But there was no denying the hard work Naseer and Ravi had put in as a team. During the making of the film, the two of them would keep improvising, re-working their dialogues at a perturbing regularity, the professional chemistry between the two actors was incredible, no matter what.
|A still from Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro|
Those were socialist times and there was a funding structure based on hierarchy. At first Ravi’s fees had been slotted higher up on the ladder; later we felt the need to reduce this because we had to pay some extra crewmembers. Ravi was informed of this and he took it in his stride.
Given the unbelievable success of the film, we even starting working on a sequel, which was supposed to be a commissioned project. I tried to write a script but never actually got around to doing it.
Ravi was keen on making cinema; he became in the later years more preoccupied with the social aspect, the responsibility that comes as an actor and a director. “You can only be what you want to be if you give up your past,” he would often say to me. I would wonder if this was some nostalgic reference to his most recognized success in the film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.
But I never asked him, considering this could have been quite an emotional for him. And now I never can.
What a fine and unique gentleman he was.
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 22, 2010)
It is set to be a dream launch. Varun Dhawan, younger son of former Bollywood box office pasha David Dhawan, has been signed by Karan Johar for a project that will take off in 2011.
Trade sources say that David was always clear that his older son Rohit will be a director and younger son Varun an actor. Rohit is meant to be directing Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Chitrangadha Singh and Deepika Padukone in Desi Boyz. And Varun was waiting in the wings till KJo discovered him.
Karan says, “The banner will launch two new boys in the same film. The details of the boys and the director are still in the process of finalisation there are no confirmations as yet.”
However, it is almost certain that Varun will be one of those boys. Incidentally, the director too will be a Dharma faithful. There was a time when David could have been the ideal filmmaker to launch his own son. He was ruling the BO with super-hits like Biwi No 1, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Coolie No 1 and many of those critically-spurned puerile super-hits. However, post Partner (again a huge hit) David is in semi-hibernation. In fact, after his Do Knot Disturb fiasco, the trade has been sceptical about DD’s box office prowess. The filmmaker has been signed for Sanjay Dutt’s Rascals with Sanju and Ajay Devgn in the lead.
