Pradeep Sarkar carved a niche with his directorial debut Parineeta but his reputation took a beating with his second venture, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. That was one of the two reasons as to why everyone is so skeptical about Lafangey Parindey. The second reason being, Lafangey Parindey seems so different from Sarkar’s kind of cinema. The promos showed Mumbai, its gritty streets, chawls, boxing, dance and skating…something which is surely isn’t his forte. But surprise! Lafangey Parindey turns out to be a neat film! Pradeep Sarkar handles it very well and is surely worth the 250 bucks ticket!
The story of the movie: Nandu (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is a street fighter who has a unique way of fighting with his opponents-blindfolded. Confident, charming and carefree…he lives a content life fighting and roaming with his chawl friends. In the same chawl lives Pinky Palkar (Deepika Padukone). She works at a mall but can wonderfully dance on skates and dreams of winning a reality show. One rainy night, hell breaks loose as Nandu has a dreadful experience. On the same night, Pinky loses her eyesight in an accident. Fate brings them together and how Nandu and Pinky teach each other lessons of life is what the film is all about.
You fall for Lafangey Parindey in the intro scene itself (Nandu explaining his fighting strategy). Nandu’s interaction with Anna (Kay Kay Menon) and the accident takes the film higher and higher! Especially the accident sequence was nicely executed (by showing it in 2 different ways). It also adds a nice surprise in the narrative. The scene thereafter right till the intermission keep you hooked thanks to interesting sequences and a fast-paced narrative! In short, the first half is just awesome!
Post-interval, the film tries to maintain the flow but gets dragging at places. Also Neil’s dance was weird in the elimination round sequence. Perhaps he could have worked better at his moves. The writer could have added some more turns towards the finale. But that would have not only increased the length of the film but also could have failed. Hence he kept it simple but at the same time predictable. Thankfully it works but also reminds you of the climax of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi! Nevertheless, overall the film turns out to be a decent attempt!
Neil Nitin Mukesh was a surprise for such a role. But he does total justice to it and although he doesn’t look like a chawl guy, his terrific performance compensates for it. The actor will soon be seen in 2 exciting films-Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf and Abbas-Mustan’s The Italian Job remake! Way to go NNM!
Deepika Padukone is undoubtedly the best performer in the film! Her dance, mannerisms, expressions and her beautiful smile…everything about her shall leave you spellbound! Another amazing performance from an amazing actor! Piyush Mishra was great no doubt but he doesn’t leave a mark as he did in Tere Bin Laden and Gulaal. Manish Choudhary was decent as the cop. Namit Das who played Ranbir’s pal in Wake Up Sid was too good. So was Palomi. Kay Kay Menon has a special appearance in the film and nice to see him after a long time. Others were good.
M Anandh’s music wasn’t outstanding but made for decent listening. The title song was the best song of the lot followed by Man Lafanga and Nain Parindey. Zubin Balaporia’s background music was perfect. N Nataraja Subramaniam’s cinematography was as usual excellent. Sanjib Datta’s editing works especially in the beginning scenes. Sham Kaushal’s action was terrific and very realistic. Bosco Caesar and Sandro Guerra, the choreographers do a great job and they contribute in the film’s success considering that dance and skates have an important role in the film.
Newbie Gopi Puthran has written the story, screenplay and dialogues and has excelled in all 3! Story was novel but it’s the screenplay that is really terrific. Dialogues seem very real for the setting of the film.
Finally Pradeep Sarkar springs a surprise! He enters a new territory but does an exceptional job! Good to see that he’s back in form and hoping that his next film, too, would work!
Some of the best scenes of the film:
1. The first scene
2. Nandu with Anna
3. Pinky’s accident
4. The song Nain Parindey
5. Nandu trains Pinky
6. The intermission point
7. Nandu puts on the skates for the first time
8. The cop’s investigation
9. Nandu and Pinky watching movie (hilarious!)
10. The last 15 minutes
On the whole, Lafangey Parindey is a great attempt and succeeds in impressing. Surely worth putting your money for! At the box office, it has all the time upto the release of We Are Family (September 2) to rule and emerge as a hit!
My rating-*** ½ out of 5!

Tarun Dhanrajgir is all set to make his directorial debut with Kis Hudh Tak that releases today. The movie is a fast-paced suspense thriller that deals with date rape — a disturbing social issue which plagues our society today. And though the film deals with such a serious social issue, it will provide a healty dose of music, dance, drama, action, et al without diluting the story line. Tarun says, “We’ve made a great movie. It’s a movie made from the heart. I would call it a complete movie with an original and unique screenplay. What it lacks in star power, it more than amply makes up for with powerful and authentic performances. It does not only entertain you, but it also gives you something to think about.” Tarun launches two newcomers — Pavan Sharma and Shital Shah — in this film. Tarun, who’s very excited about the film’s release, says that the movie has turned out as per vision only because of the team work that the cast and crew has put in. The film releases today in Eros Cinema for two weeks.
Ajay Devgn and Shazahn Padamsee failed to dirty dance with each other while shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji
Agreed, Ajay Devgn does manage to develop on-screen chemistry with the oddest of actresses, but when it comes doing it while dancing, he’s no Patrick Swayze. And turns out, Alyque Padamsee’s daughter Shazahn Padamsee, Ajay’s co-star in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji was of no help to him either. Both actors developed cold feet during a Salsa session for the film.
Yesterday, Ajay and Shazahn were required to shake a leg on a saucy Salsa number for Madhur’s film, at YRF. When both the actors failed to generate any chemistry through the dance sequence, Madhur and choreographer Sandip Soparrkar decided to discontinue shooting. “Though a few shots were canned completely, the major portion will be completed only later,” says a source.
The decision to cancel the entire shooting schedule was taken jointly by Madhur and Sandip. When contacted, Sandip was very hesitant to talk, but on probing he confirms, “Madhur and I decided to take this step. We wanted the dance to be of better quality. It has to look perfect.”
And perfection comes only with practice. The shoot to complete the number has been put off by at least a month. Ajay had rehearsed for a couple of days and Shazahn for a week. Sandip says, “Madhur wants Ajay and Shazahn to look like professional dancers. Keeping in mind the moves that Madhur is looking for, we would need at least six weeks of rehearsals.”
When contacted, Shazahn did not admit to the fact that her chemistry with Ajay was not good enough but added, “Yes, we do need a few more rehearsals.” Madhur Bhandarkar remained unavailable for comment.
p.s. The buzz on the sets was that Kajol was supposed to come and watch hubby in action. Performance anxiety, Ajay?
… that’s how Archana Kochhar describes her costumes on Kangna Ranaut in a forthcoming film
Nimisha Tiwari | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 13, 2010)
The promos are already on air — diva Kangna Ranaut seducing Ajay Devgn with a song and dance while batting her kohl-lined eyes in the film Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. Looking dolllike with her big hair stylishly done-up, and her slim 26-inch waist sexily clad in a shimmery black gown, the actress has played her cards right with this underworld-based flick.
And one person who’s banking on Kangna’s costumes going down well with the audience is Juhu-based designer Archana Kochhar. “I was floored when Kangna chose my design over many oth-Archana. ‘I loved it’ were Kangna’s words on seeing the black number she wore in the film.
Archana has designed two outfits for Kangna in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. “One is a gold shimmery number and the other the classic black which has a deep neck and backless appeal. Kangna’s skin is porcelain white, so the outfits look stunning on her,” revealed Archana. Riding the Bollywood wave, this designer has her hands and dates full in the fashion calendar too. “This month’s been super busy. I did the finale at the Cairo Fashion Week on July 2, and then had eight South stars including Sada, Sarat Kumar, Radhika and others walking the ramp for me at the Chennai International Fashion Week presented by Gitanjali on July 10. And now, I am gearing up for the opening of the Dubai Fashion Fiesta on July 22 from where I will rush to showcase at the Bangalore Fashion Week on July 24. Fashion-wise, God’s been kind to me,” added Archana.
The South actor specialises in gaming; he made the videogame for Ghajini too
Very little is known of South hottie Rana Daggubati’s gaming skills. The actor, who will soon make his Bollywood debut with Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maro Dum, made the videogame for Aamir Khan’s Ghajini. Rana actually happens to be an ace Digital Post entrepreneur and specialises in the gaming field.
Before pursuing acting as a career, Rana was into making video games. He had his own SFX Company Spirit Media and he made several videogames for many companies.
Rana funnelled Spirit Media into an alliance with FX Labs, a game development company that has worked on popular Bollywood movies like Dhoom 2 and Ghajini. Rana says, ‘It was my past job, which I thoroughly enjoyed. We use to make games for companies. The games were also meant for media programmes which I eventually entered.’
In 2007 Spirit Media collaborated with Prime Focus and Rana acquired a seat on their Board of Directors.
He then began training for a career in acting, which he was passionate about. He said, ‘I went through two years of intensive training in acting which included dance, diction, action and stage plays. I was directly or indirectly always connected to this field and eventually got into acting. I also underwent training in a stunt academy. During this time period, I focused on developing scripts – transforming ideas into workable blueprints for films.’
A host of Bollywood A-listers to mentor slum children for Shiamak Davar’s directorial debut. It’s payback time, folks
Shiamak Davar’s directorial debut Naach Meri Jaan Fataa Faat, on slum children appearing for a dance competition, will have an entourage of Bollywood superstars working with him.
The process of selecting the slum kids will not be fataa fat though. The ten slum children (between the age of 5 and 18 years), 5 boys and 5 girls, who would be handpicked after a series of auditions, would be handed over to ten superstar mentors for training. Only post this stage will the kids face the camera for Shiamak.
The hunt for these slum children will begin next month and the film team will be travelling across various slums in Mumbai including Dharavi (of course, that couldn’t be missed after Danny Boyle’s visit) and Kalyan.
The idea of selecting ten superstar mentors emerged from Shiamak’s long and illustrious career with the film industry. The film’s producer Shailendra Singh says, “We believe dance can really make a difference to the common man’s life.
We chose Shiamak so he could guide the destiny of ten kids from the slums. Also, Shiamak has worked closely with many stars. Now it’s time for them to do something that would benefit not just Shiamak or our film but society at large.”
Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor are some of the superstars who will give their invaluable time to these children. Salim-Suleiman would be doing the vital music score and the film is expected to hit the screens on April 29 next year, which is World Dance Day.
Shahid Kapoor, Sridevi and Ruslaan Mumtaz said they would happily be part of anything that Shiamak Davar does.

Jacqueline Fernandes is one heroine who happens to be one of the latest seven seas’ export to Bollywood. She is surely one of the newcomers in Bollywood to watch out for!
And to make things merrier, you can catch this eye candy on this month’s edition of ‘Vogue’. It is in this issue, where she does confess, “I still don’t know how to drape a sari. Man, how do they dance in them.” And when asked about what she wanted to be, pat comes the reply, “I wanted to be the mermaid”. She also goes onto say, “I am not normal”… only to clarify that what she really meant was that, “I love having people around me and I am loud and cheerful. But on my own, I am really quiet.”
All this and much mush more verbal exotica with Jacqueline Fernandes, only in the latest edition of ‘Vogue’. Don’t miss this cooler!

It maybe a very dreamlike, glitzy glam world, this film industry, but if you thought an actor’s life was all about partying and socialising and looking pretty then think again. The most adored and loved actor of our industry, who is a power house of talent and versatility is facing what may just be called the occupational hazards. Long working hours and stressful work schedules that is the part of this industry has obviously taken a toll on Amitabh Bachchan who is in some serious pain due to what is being suspected as multiple Hernia in his lower abdomen. The lower abdomen has swollen up and there is an acute sharp pain every time he takes exerts himself. The doctors advised the mega star to go in for a surgery for the same but due to a busy schedule and work pressure the Big B refrained.
Speaking about his ordeal, Amitabh blogged recently “… a stomach surgery, indeed two in quick succession always have the possibility of hernia developing. And that is what is of concern now. There are now two urgent hernia in the lower abdomen which have swelled up dangerously and cause me problems.” The two he mentioned in his blogs was the one he underwent during the shoot of Coolie, when he met with an accident on the sets. Further he reveals, “Sharp pains when I stand for too long or walk too much. During dance and action scenes there is huge pain and I counter that with a hernia belt which is temporary and not really a cure. So the doctors have been after me for a surgery, well two actually on either side of the abdomen and I have been avoiding it because of my busy schedule. But I shall have to take care of it now, and now after my third surgery of the stomach a few years back, when I was diagnosed for diverticulitus, there is another hernia that is developing. Of that later, say doctors. Because of the several times that the stomach has been opened up, there are lesions, and they at times stick and cause problems.”
Bollywood Hungama wishes Mr. Bachchan a speedy recovery.
Life has come a full circle for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. 16 years after he started his career in cinema directing the songs for Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1942: A Love Story, he has once again choreographed an entire song in his forthcoming Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Bachchan starrer Guzaarish.
While he did provide inputs through a vital step here and a pirouette there in his various films, Bhansali has never fully choreographed a number in any of his earlier films, which had pivotal dance scenes.
Incidentally, Bhansali has also turned into a full-fledged music composer for Guzaarish.
While he became a music composer by design, choreography happened by accident.
A source close to the director says, “It happened last week while he was shooting a dance sequence with Aishwarya. Sanjay wanted her to do an impromptu and spontaneous dance. Sanjay wanted it to look as if Aishwarya was not dancing for the camera.”
But the movements that the choreographer showed them were somehow not working out. Sanjay found the whole effect too rehearsed and premeditated.
|(Pic: Jitu Savlani)|
The source adds, “Time was running out so Sanjay finally decided to take matters into his own hands. Since he is also the film’s music composer, he understood the song’s core rhythm and soon began demonstrating the steps to Aishwarya. Everyone eventually suggested that he choreograph the entire song. Within four hours the song was done.”
The director says, “In the course of a film one often encounters any number of hurdles. It’s a director’s job to be equipped to handle any eventuality on the sets. Actors often get stuck in situations that they can’t get out of on their own. It’s the director’s job to guide them. That’s all I did.”
The handful of people who have watched the rushes of Guzaarish Dance Of Life (the song’s unofficial title) say it’s one of Aishwarya’s most brilliantly choreographed and executed dance numbers ever.
Now that Bhansali, a devotee and follower of the Kathak exponent Pandit Birju Maharaj, has reconnected with his love for choreography, he is seriously thinking of doing all the choreography of his future project Heera Mandi, a film based on classical dancing.
And this time it would be official.

Media has been rife with speculations that Hrithik will be performing at IPL awards and the closing ceremony plus at the IIFA night too.
However now it looks like all are in for a disappointment since his doctor has ordered him ‘no dance, no running and no stress of any kind whatsoever on his knee.’
While the knee was recuperating well, the dance sequence shot for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Guzaarish has taken its toll again on the knee and as a result, he regrettably won’t be able to participate.
Hrithik’s agency Carving Dreams confirmed the news saying, “Hrithik was excited to participate and had given his consent. He even went to Singapore 3 days ago to consult his doctor and get his final reports. Unfortunately, his doctor has ruled it out for at least a month to month and a half for now, if it has to recuperate. While he is disappointed at the news; we can’t risk his health in the long run”.
Currently Hrithik is shooting for a co branded TVC for Kites and it is learnt that the creatives had to be changed to delete the treadmill and dance sequence from the same.
