Movie Review: COCKTAIL by FENIL SETA
0Last Friday’s superhit film, Rohit Shetty’s Bol Bachchan, was inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Gol Maal but in a way hugely reminded me of Shetty’s 2009 film All The Best. Similarly, Cocktail carries a déjà vu of Love Aaj Kal. However, while Imtiaz Ali directed Love Aaj Kal, in Cocktail he contributed only as a writer. Wish he had directed too! Cocktail would have been in a different league then! More on that later!
The story of the movie: Meera (Diana Penty) arrives in London with loads of expectations and dreams but her world comes crashing down. She bumps into Veronica (Deepika Padukone) who comes into her rescue and she gives Meera refuge in her pad. Both are poles apart – Meera is introvert and decently dressed while Veronica is wild and ever ready to party. Veronica comes across serial womanizer Gautam (Saif Ali Khan) and sparks fly. Gautam moves in with Veronica. Meera hates Gautam and moreover, she fails to understand the no-strings-attached relationship shared by Gautam and Veronica. All hell breaks loose when Gautam’s mother Kavita Kapoor (Dimple Kapadia) lands up unannounced in London at Deepika’s place to find Gautam ‘living in’ with two women. Gautam, to save his face, tells a lie that changes the life of the three friends.
By now, it’s common knowledge that Cocktail’s first half is brilliant but slides down in the second hour. The film has a shaky start and it seems a surprise that a film like this has minimal background score. But soon one gets used to it. More >

0WILL COCKTAIL ACHIEVE A LOVE AAJ KAL-LIKE SUCCESS?
There was absolutely no hype for Cocktail while it was being filmed. But everything changed the minute its trailer was unveiled. Suddenly, the film became one of the most anticipated films of the year! And why not? The actors look great, the locales are stunning, music is fresh and talented and respected people are a part of the venture!
Believe it or not, Cocktail, which is a romcom, is directed by Homi Adajania who directed a grim, edgy and intense film like Being Cyrus! The film is written by Imtiaz Ali and stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and newbie Diana Penty. This is the third film produced by Saif and Dinesh Vijan after Love Aaj Kal and Agent Vinod. Music is by Pritam and has an urbane feel to it. ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’, ‘Yaariyan’ and ‘Daru Desi’ have got tremendous appreciation. The film is about friendship and the strongest point is that all the three characters are distinct and well sketched. And it has come out very nicely in the promos. Saif is in the comfort zone, in the league of Hum Tum and Love Aaj Kal and that’s fine as long as he’s doing great. Deepika looks ravishing while Diana is a surprise. She’s very adorable and looks damn cute in ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’! She’s really fortunate to have got this film as her debut vehicle. Besides the trio, the film also stars Boman Irani, Dimple Kapadia and Randeep Hooda.
Few experts have reservations with the title like ‘Cocktail’ and feel that it won’t work in the More >

Decoding Cocktail — a film about friendship, relationships and sex
Upala KBR (BOMBAY TIMES; May 22, 2012)
The Love Aaj Kal team — Saif Ali Khan, Dinesh Vijan, Deepika Padukone, Imtiaz Ali (as a writer) are all coming together again. This time for Cocktail, directed by Homi Adjania.
Why the unusual title? Producer Dinesh Vijan says, “Cocktail sums up the film. Love is the common ingredient in friendship, lust, forgiveness and happiness, so if you get love right, the cocktail is perfect. This story is about getting the ingredients just right.”
Homi says, “Everywhere in India the word cocktail is understood as a mix. We have juice cocktails, Diwali cocktails, you know there’s even a variant of khichdi called cocktail! As for this film, it is about three lives which get mixed. Where passions are blended, shaken or stirred and relationships are merely cocktails of the human heart.”
Cocktail, shot in London and Cape Town, has three interesting and pivotal characters. It revolves around three friends — Gautam (Saif), Veronica (Deepika) and Meera (Diana Penty who debuts in this film). The freshness and energy of these characters and the language used is the film’s USP. It’s a romantic, fun film but with an emotional connect.
Homi, who became the proud father of a second baby boy (they have named him Zane) on Sunday evening, adds, “The movie is about three people and the dynamics between them make it a beautiful relationship. All three of them make an ideal couple — instead of More >
‘Love Aaj Kal’ again: Saif launches new girl in Cocktail
0By Joginder Tuteja, July 15, 2011 – 11:34 IST
There is a new girl in Saif Ali Khan’s life and he isn’t willing to talk about it yet. Kareena doesn’t need to worry though as this liaison is strictly restricted for screen. For his upcoming (tentatively titled) Cocktail, there is an actress other than Deepika Padukone as well whose identity has been kept a secret.
“It isn’t only Deepika who is the leading lady in the film; there is another girl roped in too”, informs a senior crew member on condition of anonymity, “She has a very strong role in the film which justifies the ‘cocktail’ in Saif’s life. There are strict instructions from Saif as well as director Homi Adajania that no one is supposed to talk about this girl. She is going to be a surprise package.”
This mystery girl hasn’t acted in a Bollywood film before and Cocktail would be her launch-pad. Her being roped in the film, though surprising, isn’t something new coming from Saif though. Reason being that he had tried something like this in Love Aaj Kal as well.
“Till a few weeks before the release of Love Aaj Kal, no one knew that it was a two heroine film with Giselle Monteiro in the film”, says an insider, “In fact even till the day of film’s release, everyone thought that she was a Punjabi ‘kudi’ in real life as well though Saif threw a shocker by announcing later that she was a Brazilian. He likes doing that to his audience. Who knows what nationality would this new girl in Cocktail belong to?”
