Shabana’s ‘big’ regret

Getting into a role, a fractured foot, has done the actress in… she’s now on painkillers and diet
SUBHASH K JHA Times News Network (BOMBAY TIMES; April 27, 2010)
Getting into the skin of her screen character is proving to be as weighty an issue for Shabana Azmi as it had been for Hrithik Roshan recently. The Bollywood hunk, you remember, after shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish in which he plays a paraplegic, found his narrow waist spreading to a gross 36 inches after stuffing himself silly with khaana-peena from the Mehboob Studios canteen to look the part.
Billed as one of the fittest men in Bollywood, Hrithik went through much agony to shed the flab, and even now is not the lean and mean hottie of Krrrish and Dhoom 2. While Shabana’s is another case. The czarina of method acting who tampered with her metabolism for Gurinder Chadha’s film, is now wondering if the effort was worth it.
It was meant to be for the role, but Shabana now faces a serious health problem thanks to the 25 pounds she put on to play the murderous mom of a marriageable girl in the film. This was followed by the mishap in which she fractured a foot, had her leg in plaster and was plonked for a goodish period in a wheelchair. Not being able to get around actively and lugging around that extra weight, Shabana is now depressed. The cast is out, but the actress is just finding her feet, and at her first performance in the play Broken Images after the fracture, Shabana said on Saturday that she was on painkillers and worried as hell about how to get back to her normal size.
“Over three months, I gorged on samosas, pakoras, chocolates and all things fried,” revealed the actress. “I had a ball having found an official reason to pig out. But the fun came with a payback. My back gave way and I had to take sessions with an osteopath through the schedule. When I got back to Mumbai, my cholesterol, triglycerides and thyroid levels had hit the roof ! My doctor was furious. He said if I had asked him, he would never have let me do this.”
Twenty-five years ago, throwing herself into her smashing role for Mandi, Shabana had done the same. “But this time the fat that has got deposited in my arteries is there to stay and it was far too risky to do this for a role,” she ruefully admitted. The actress is now on a strict diet and medication. “It’s torture, I simply cannot eat every two hours, which is the way all nutrition plans work these days. I lose weight but the minute I start eating again, I rapidly put it back. I feel like a yoyo. Age has a lot to do with it. I guess these are the hazards of inhabiting a part. An actor is her own instrument… unlike an instrumentalist. If you play the sitar, for instance, how well you play depends on the dexterity of your fingers plus how finely-tuned the sitar is. But an actor has only her head, heart and physicality to play with and it is her business to tune herself to the demands of the part.” Maybe Hrithik Roshan should lend his weight to her cause and show Shabana how to get back into shape!
Sallu’s jailmate to be consulant on a prison movie
Mar 25th
They were perhaps some of the darkest days in Salman Khan’s life, but now they are set to light up the silver screen. Salman, one of the prime accused in the infamous chinkara case, had to spend time behind bars in 1996 and 1998, and now that period of his life is being recreated in a film called Qaidi No 210. And guess who is helping with the research? Salman’s former cellmate, Mahesh Kumar Saini.
Mahesh and Salman struck up something of a friendship in the three days they spent together in Jodhpur Central jail in 1996. Ranjit Sharma, the producer of Qaidi No 210, was introduced to Saini by the jailor during the course of his research and now he has taken him onboard as a consultant.
“I spent quite some time researching the subject and met many people in Jodhpur Central jail. That’s where I also met Mahesh Kumar Saini, a murder suspect,” said Ranjit Sharma. “I told him to get in touch with me whenever he was released. He got in touch some months ago and he has given me details about Salman’s stay in the jail. Chirag Patil, son of former cricketer Sandeep Patil, will play Salman.”
Mahesh himself is all praise for Salman and convinced about his innocence. “All I can say is that Salman is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. I know for a fact that he is innocent. I can’t reveal more because he had told me everything in confidence, but Salman never fired that shot (which killed the chinkara).
He is going through hell to save someone else. I don’t think he ever expected this incident to become such a controversial matter and that even political bigwigs would play dirty. But one day justice will be done,” he said.
Recounting the three days he spent with Salman in jail, Mahesh said, “On the first day, he was tense. I was the jail monitor, so I chatted with him and took him for a prison tour.” Several interesting aspects about Salman revealed by Mahesh may finally make their way to the script as well. “Salman is addicted to coffee. He wanted one cup every hour. He hardly ate anything except the chocolates his brother Sohail had given him. He had many visitors. The ones I knew were his sister Alvira and brother Sohail. On the second night, I made soyabean and we ate together.”
Mahesh says Salman even managed to exercise in the jail. “We managed to sneak in dumb bells for him though they are not allowed. On the second day he was feeling bored. I arranged a carrom board for him and even a chess board.”
When Salman was finally released on bail, he offered to give Mahesh Rs 20,000 as a token of his appreciation. “I told him I can’t take the money, but I’d be grateful if he could find me a job when I got out. Salman said he’d do the needful, but I have to reach him.
I hope to meet him someday because I know a person like him will honour his word,” said Mahesh.

Mr Suril and Mrs Dipti Patel, a big movie buff couple, captured some interesting pics of the last day’s shoot of the upcoming film Anjaana Anjaani at San Francisco. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Siddharth Anand, this hugely awaited film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
As per the information relayed by the production guys to Mr & Mrs Patel, the premise of the scene is ‘Heroes’. Auro's first interview!
Dec 1st
Hi Auro, how are you today?
I’m a little tired because many people are coming to talk to me. Sometimes I get tired when so many people talk to me. Do you get tired when people talk to you? I am happy that you came to talk to me.
How is your Paa?
My Paa he is a very important man. He is what they call, something po…yes politician. Yes, I remembered he is an MP. He is very nice to me. He took me to see Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. I went for a walk in the park with him. And, when I got tired he carried me on his back.
Do you like your Paa more or your mother?
I like both of them. Mom is a gynaecologist. She makes babies. She doesn’t give me khichdi to eat. I love khichdi. I want to put mirchi (chillies) in the khichdi. And she doesn’t allow it. Because I will fall ill. She gives me chocolates and milk shake. I love chocolate flavour.
Do you have girls in your school?
Ya, but I do not like them. Because one girl, she is always looking at me. I run away from her. I have a gang of six boys. They always tease me about this girl.
What is her name?
I don’t want to tell.
How is Uncle Balki who made this film Paa with you?
He used to get annoyed with me. If I didn’t do things properly he would tell me to do it again. It is tough to do the same thing again and again. I don’t know why Uncle Balki did like that. But I like him.
Are you holding a special screening for your schoolmates?
I want all the children to come and see my film Paa. It is going to release on December 4. You please come and see it also.
Asin-the desi Calamity Jane?!
Oct 27th

Fainting spells seem contagious in the industry. Priyanka Chopra started the trend, and now Asin follows suit. It’s worrying though, that the compulsion to maintain an hourglass figure is affecting the health of the actresses. They lose weight at an alarming rate and resort to unhealthy dietary plans. It’s bound to catch up, sometimes even in public.
On Saturday (October 24), just two days before her 24th birthday, Asin collapsed at a club in Andheri where she was doing a series of non-stop television interviews for her latest film. In the middle of the conversations, Asin simply passed out and had to be revived by her staff and friends who rushed forward with instant energy-boosters. Asin brought in her birthday with a quiet dinner on Sunday night with her close friends. She said, “I had eight of my closest friends over for dinner. We had a ball. At midnight, they made me cut a cake. I felt like I was 12 years old again.” Earlier in the evening, Asin arrived home to a big surprise. She said, “When I opened the door, the entire house was done up with balloons by my parents, just like they used to for my birthdays when I was a child. I had to burst quite a few balloons because there was no room to even walk. I’ve never felt happier.” The second half of the day was devoted to spending time with the kids in her highrise apartment. She said, “Fortunately there was enough cake and chocolates to go around. So it was great fun. This is the best birthday I’ve had.” |
Actors making journos health-conscious!
Jul 16th
In a long career as a film scribe one has eaten one too many meals with the stars. Yesteryear actors took feeding the film scribe part a tad too seriously and many of them often believed that the way to a journalist’s article was through the meal they served. Now it’s a different ball game. If you visit Kareena Kapoor, of the size-zero craze for an interview, she will feed you slimming cheese and cappuccino with a sugar free supplement. Her closest contender Katrina Kaif offers you just green tea at her home. Katrina, who can go without a meal for six to eight hours, is fitness conscious and wants her guests to be the same. Ajay Devgan smirks if he spots you with a packet of potato chips and will insist you have a baked continental dish with him. Imran Khan is happy to give you water because that is his poison. Deepika Padukone loves her rasam-rice but doesn’t insist that the interviewer warm up to it. “You can have coffee and cookies,” she says with a warm smile. Asin will offer you walnuts, cashews, chocolates, lime water and if you beg to differ, her maid will give you amazing South Indian coffee. Akshay Kumar, who eats lunch at 12 noon (come hell or high water) welcomes you to join him for palak paneer, an oil-free sabzi and rotis. No parathas for this Punjab ka munda and likewise for the journalists interviewing him. At Aamir’s home, if you are a solo guest the sandwiches come from his kitchen and if there is an unusually large contingent then the sandwiches come from outside.
Ekta and Shobha Kapoor insist on offering scribes low cal brown bread sandwiches with salmon/tomato, but if you have a sweet tooth they’re okay with offering you a brownie. Jeetendra insists you only eat a fruit platter because he does just that. Shahid Kapoor will order you the best Chinese meal from either of his two favourite suburban restaurants… and will even supervise whether you’re eating well. And, of course, Priyanka Chopra, who is currently on a mom-supervised-home-cooked-meal trip, takes the bakery. She insists journalists eat everything from paneer/naan/fish curry rice to curd rice because she has a healthy appetite. And she gets self-conscious eating alone. |

A friend of Priyanka’s said, “Priyanka has been asked to go slow on pakodas, pastas, pizzas, pastries, burgers, chocolates and aerated drinks. She has a very gruelling shoot for Fear Factor coming up in the next few weeks.

Resting at her home on her birthday on Monday, Asin laughed, “I’ve become quite a hazard zone, haven’t I? Going by the number of mishaps, I qualify as the desi Calamity Jane. Actually, I hadn’t slept at all that day or the night before. I had been doing back-to-back interviews for London Dreams for the last one week with just 3-4 hours of sleep. On that day, there was no sleep or food at all. Anyway, I’m making up for the exhausting week with the most peaceful and happy birthday of my life.”
