Tuning into the musical concoction of Cocktail

BOMBAY TIMES (June 25, 2012)

If the music of a film makes it to chartbuster lists before it even releases, half of a producer’s job is done. And in the case of Cocktail, producer Dinesh Vijan seems to be experiencing the same kind of high. His next Cocktail, a fresh youthful entertainer, which marks Saif Ali Khan’s comeback as a loverboy and also features Deepika Padukone in a smouldering new look, has received a tremendous response for its music. Following the first two chart-thumpers, Tumhi Ho Bandhu and Daaru Desi, the recently released track Yaariyaan too has become quite popular in a short while.

Pritam has created the tracks of Cocktail, and having worked earlier with the team on Love Aaj Kal and Agent Vinod, Vijan says that the music composer from the beginning knew the kind of music they wanted. “Although the film, set in London, is about modern characters, the basic emotions are Indian. So, the soundtrack is essentially folk in flavour. But, we have also incorporated rock and electronic sounds,” he explains, adding that the folk influences have worked for them.

For instance, the song Tumhi Ho Bandhu, which took 45 days to make, became viral with positive word-of-mouth within a short span. With simple yet poignant lyrics like ‘Jag mujhpe lagaye pabandi, main hoon hi nahi iss duniya ki’ by Irshad Kamil, Tumhi Ho Bandhu has been sung by Kavita Seth and lip-synced by Diana Penty in gorgeous locales of Cape Town. Says Pritam, “We got the melody very early, but we More >

In an industry filled with strugglers, there are countless hopeful eyes which wait for that one elusive break. While not all of them manage to get that break, a few lucky ones do. The really chosen ones in fact manage to get a break with a big banner and Bollywood’s latest entrant Ranveer Singh is among those lucky few. Ranveer is all set to debut with Yash Raj Films’ Band Baaja Baaraat which releases on Dec 10. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama‘s Nikhil Ramsubramaniam, this new Punjabi munda talks about how he is literally living his dream and much more. Read on!

My Background

“I am a complete Bandra boy, born and raised in Mumbai. After doing my junior college from HR College in Mumbai, I went to the US to do my BA from Indiana University in Bloomington. Post my return from the US, I was struggling to make it as an actor for almost 3 and a half years until I got my first break.”

Childhood ambition

“I always wanted to be an actor ever since I was a little kid. I knew that I had to do something related to performing arts and I enjoyed acting the most as it incorporated so many different art forms. However, when I was in college, I realised that getting a break is not at all easy as it was mostly people with a filmy background who got the prime opportunities. I don’t have a filmy background at all so it all seemed too far-fetched for me. So for a few years I worked in advertising as a More >

Music Review: BAND BAAJA BAARAAT by JOGINDER TUTEJA

EXPECTATIONS

A film with weddings as the backdrop. A young couple. North India. Yash Raj Films. Fun. Frolic. Colours. Celebrations. Band. Baaja. Baaraat.

With elements like these, what else do you expect but a rollicking music score that doesn’t let the fun element drop down even for a single moment. Films belonging to similar genre, Dil Bole Hadippa and Badmaash Company, had music by Pritam. However this time around, YRF has entrusted composer duo of Salim-Sulaiman and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya to do the needful. Do they deliver? Of course yes and in fact a lot more.

MUSIC

It’s a Dev D kind of a start (hence reminding of Amit Trivedi’s style of composition) with ‘Ainvayi Ainvayi‘. However, one minute into the song and you know that there is going to be no turning back for Salim-Sulaiman as they get the Punjabi milieu bang on for this club dance track that gets on you by the time you are just in the middle of the track, let alone finishing hearing the entire song.

Salim Merchant and Sunidhi Chauhan are totally engrossed into the song as one can visualise them dancing and not just singing ‘Ainvayi Ainvayi‘ which has chartbuster written all over it. Add to that some fun lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya and you know that you won’t have enough of this song even after you are through hearing its ‘Dilli Club Mix‘ track that has Master Salim pairing up with Sunidhi Chauhan.

The young singer-actress has been roped in to sing the state anthem written by him

Prithwish Ganguly | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 11, 2010)

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Shruti Haasan have bonded big time. The CM, who recently wrote the lyrics for Tamil Nadu’s state anthem, has roped in Shruti to lend her vocals to it. Karunanidhi, an avid follower of her father Kamal Haasan’s films, has also liked Shruti’s work. And the girl’s over the moon, also because AR Rahman has composed the music for the song. Karunanidhi and Shruti are planning to take their association forward by making the song a hit globally.

Shruti now becomes the youngest singer and musician to be part of the Tamil Nadu state anthem composed by Rahman for the World Classic Tamil conference called Ulaga Thamizh Semmozhi Maanadu. She joined a host of other South Indian music maestros like P Sushila, Hariharan, Bombay Jayshree, Rapper Blaze, Yuvan Shankar Raja, GV Prakash, Nityasree Mahadevan, Chinmayi, Naresh Iyer, Vijay Yesudas, Srinivas, Karthik, T.M. Soundararajan, Harini, Benny Dayal who have also contributed to the song.
