Film’s makers keen to cast actress from amongst Mallika Sherawat, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Kangna Ranaut and Jacqueline Fernandez

Over a decade since late filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra’s Bawandar, another film on Bhanwari Devi is being made, this time by a team of people who were earlier associated with Ekta Kapoor’s TV production house.

Sexually assulted by a group of men in 1992, the woman from Rajasthan recently made news again when a CD was released showing the involvement of a local politico.

The makers are considering five actresses to play Bhanwari — Mallika Sherawat, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Kangna Ranaut and Jacqueline Fernandez. Filmmaker Nikhil Tonk on why he wants to cast one of these ladies…

Bipasha Basu She is very charismatic.

Mallika Sherawat She’s a smart woman to play a smart person like Bhanwari. People will come to watch her. She is camera friendly and will do justice to the part.

Nandita Das seems to be on a new high these days. Not only has her debut film Firaaq got appreciation and awards, her marriage to industrialist Subodh Maskara, in January this year, seems to have brought a sense of calm to the actress-turned-director. And the reason for the glow on her face? Well, our source tells us that the stork’s visiting Nandita! Yes, rumour has it that Nandita, who is best known for her fiery performances in films like Fire and Bawandar, is expecting her first baby. She was offered a film but she refused it, citing her pregnancy as reason, because by the time the film starts, she would be in her seventh month. The text message we sent Nandita to confirm went unreplied, but we guess the actress, who’s known to be a private person, isn’t willing to talk about it yet. But if the buzz is true, then all we can do is wish Nandita all the very best.
