Fearing a possible controversy, Aditya Chopra decides to delete a character based on scamster Abdul Karim Telgi from Badmaash Company
This was one character Aditya Chopra decided to do without in his forthcoming film, Badmaash Company.
The character was inspired by Abdul Karim Telgi, the mastermind of the multi-crore stamp paper scam, languishing in jail since he was arrested by the Mumbai Police in 1991.
Aditya, sensing late in the day that that this political hot potato could end up scalding his film, decided to delete the track in which he featured.
A source from the film says, “A junior artiste was given Telgi’s look. He had a small role but he had shot his entire part with Shahid Kapoor in Mumbai. It was a fun track but Aditya – and even director Parmeet Sethi – felt that it would be wise if they did away with that portion in the final draft.”
Elaborating why the Telgi character was completely eliminated from the film, our source says, “This (Telgi) character wasn’t taking the story forward in any way. In fact, it was slowing down the pace of the film.
Retaining an element that wasn’t essential to the story and also a possible source of controversy just didn’t make sense to Aditya and Parmeet.”
Parmeet Sethi declined to comment on the matter, but a spokesperson of Yash Raj Films confirmed, “There was a scene which had a brief reference to Telgi. However, this scene did not make it to the final edit.”
Teaching is a noble profession but sadly the nobility is getting worn out. Commercialization has entered this field and the teachers and principals have to adopt ways to sustain which are no longer noble. Paathshaala touches this grave topic but unfortunately, fails to do any justice to it. The intentions of the makers and writers were, well, noble, but the goings-on look completely unbelievable. Even the climax was just okay. A good idea gone horribly wrong!
The story of the movie: Rahul Prakash Udyavar (Shahid Kapoor) joins Saraswati Vidya Mandir School as an English teacher. He was kind and considerate and with such honest qualities, he soon wins the hearts of students and fellow teachers. Very soon, the staff and students are shocked to see certain changes made in the school lifestyle in the name of ‘modernization’ by the school manager Sharma (Saurabh Shukla). When Rahul and other teachers question Sharma, he says that he is merely following the orders of Principal Aditya Sahay (Nana Patekar). He is feared by all but still the teachers brave themselves and question him. But Sahay silences everyone. Teachers feel helpless. Students get stressed out as the changes have increased their activities.
Paathshaala begins well and the first hour has some lovely moments. The intermission point is impactful when the teachers threaten the principal that they would all resign if their grievances are not addressed. But the 2nd half fails miserably to impress. Media people become a part of school management and students are compelled to take part in reality shows. Sounds interesting but its execution was plain bad. It looked completely fake and everyone who is part of television shows and press were projected as villains whose only aim is to exploit children and harass them! The climax seemed interesting (especially the trustee angle) but it was quite dragging and even that didn’t impact much.
Also, the film has several characters but some of them were just thrown in unnecessarily. A 12th std couple were in love with each other but they didn’t had any purpose with the main story. A villain angle was also included when a hot tempered dude threatens the guy with dire consequences if he didn’t break up with the girl. This was somewhere in the 1st and then throughout the film, the villain was forgotten and wasn’t shown in any scene! Then there was this female student who developed a crush on Shahid. This was a wonderful idea as getting infatuated with a teacher is part and parcel of school life. After depicting how the girl has madly fallen for Shahid in several scenes, she was not shown even in a single frame in the 2nd half!
But the film has its moments, although very few. Shahid’s entry and introduction was sweet and you instantly develop a liking for his character. Teacher ho to aisa, you’ll exclaim! Then the sequence of an ugly kid who never had any friends was touching.
The film isn’t well made but performances are worth appreciating. Shahid Kapoor looks lovely and like everytime, comes up with an amazing performance. It is disappointing that all his recent releases (including Paathshaala) have been unsuccessful at the BO. Let’s hope Badmaash Company, Milenge Milenge and Mausam works for him!
Nana Patekar was top notch. The role of a no-nonsense principal suited him to the T. He impresses a lot in the climax. Ayesha Takia like everytime looked cheerful and does a fine job. Surprisingly, there is no romantic angle between her and Shahid in the film at all! Sushant Singh rocks and gives a powerful performance. He’s an actor who never lets you down even if the script does! Saurabh Shukla played brilliantly the role of evil manager. Anjan Srivastava overacted a lot towards the start but gives a touching performance later on. Sushmita Mukherjee and Kurush Deboo lend able support.
As for the kids, Ali Haji and Swini Khara get maximum exposure and play their part wonderfully. Dwij Yadav and Balika Vadhu star Avika Gor were alright. Others and the Class 12 students do a nice job.
Hanif Shaikh not only composed the music and background score, he also wrote lyrics and dialogues as well! As for the song, Aye Khuda and Bekarar were the best songs. Background score was perfect. Dialogues were nicely worded. Art Direction was beautiful. The entire school set was marvelous.
Ahmed Khan came up with a nice story and honest intentions. But he failed at the screenplay stage. The situations looked far from convincing and thus the film didn’t look real at all. And this is the biggest reason of failure of the film.
Milind Ukey does a nice Bollywood debut. Unfortunately, he was aided with a flawed script. Better luck next time!
On the whole, Paathshaala just doesn’t work even though the basic idea was great thanks to unrealistic narrative. The film was stuck since a long time (it was scheduled to release in Jan 2009!) and now that it has hit the screens, it won’t sustain for long. What a waste of opportunity!
My rating- ** out of 5!
Shahid Kapoor is a magnet for ragging. After being teased mercilessly by a group of girls who asked him to take off his ganji and bare his chest while he was shooting for Badmaash Company on a beach in Bangkok, he once again had the fright of his life in Bangkok.
Accompanied by Vir Das and Meiyang Chang, co-stars of Yash Raj Films’ forthcoming project Badmaash Company, Shahid landed up at a massage parlour in a hotel.
But he soon realised that he had made one of the biggest mistakes of his life when the massage turned out to be one of those ‘naughty’ massages, which Bangkok is so famous for. The embarrassing incident happened during the film’s final schedule in Bangkok.
As there was hardly any scene to be shot on that particular day, the three boys decided to chill out by going for a relaxing massage.
A source says, “Shahid, Vir and Chang entered into private rooms for a massage. A few minutes later, they were seen running out of their respective massage rooms.”
The three boys came out red-faced and looked at each other very sheepishly. They asked each other, “Kya tere saath bhi wohi hua jo mere saath hua?”
Not unexpectedly, Vir and Chang denied the news. Shahid remained unavailable for comment.

Shahid Kapoor is not new to controversies. In fact, every time a movie starring the talented actor is ready to unfurl, stories about Shahid having problems with the director surface first, followed by news of romantic liaisons with the film’s leading lady.
In the past, it was said Shahid had serious differences with Priyadarshan [CHUP CHUP KE], Aziz Mirza [KISMAT KONNECTION], Vishal Bhardwaj [KAMINEY], Anurag Singh [DIL BOLE HADIPPA!] and Ken Ghosh [CHANCE PE DANCE]. Is he difficult to work with? “Isn’t it strange that people ask this question every time my movie is complete? I am asked to clarify if the director and I see eye to eye… It amuses me no end,” Shahid smiles.
Reportedly, Shahid and Parmeet Sethi, the actor who makes his directorial debut with BADMAASH COMPANY, had difference of opinion over the climax of the film. “All discussions took place while we were in the [script] reading stages. If any changes were to be made, they had to be implemented before we began filming. Yes, I did express my opinion to Adi [Chopra] and Parmeet about a certain portion in the film. They agreed because they were convinced about it. But there were no issues when we began filming,” Shahid clarifies. Shahid feels that Parmeet is a supremely talented director. “I am glad I agreed to work in BADMAASH COMPANY. Parmeet is a fine storyteller. In fact, I keep wondering, why didn’t he take to direction earlier? Direction is his true calling,” Shahid states.
There’s also talk that BADMAASH COMPANY is the newer, updated version of BUNTY AUR BABLI. True? Shahid laughs, “I’ve heard this one too, but I am just going to say just this. Watch BADMAASH COMPANY to know the difference. Frankly, why would anyone want to remake a successful film that’s still so fresh in the minds of the audience? BADMAASH COMPANY is not similar to any film. Not BUNTY AUR BABLI for sure.”

There is so much going on with the very popular Kapoor boy that it’s almost exhausting. If the upcoming Paathshaala and the next in line Badmaash Company wasn’t enough, Shahid is all geared up and looking edgy for his film Mausam that is still being shot.
As he runs around for the promotions of Paathshaala and now Badmaash Company, it’s hard to miss the beard he has kept. It keeps you on toes, while we wonder which of his looks will suit him. Was it the chocolate boy one which he kept for the longest period of time, was it the neat and clean look in Jab We Met, the hard core rough look he bore in Kaminey or is it this bearded one. Though he is definitely being complimented for this makeover on a social networking site and the Kapoor boy is more than overwhelmed as he replies “p.s thanks for all the compliments on the beard ”
While we know that this new look is definitely for Mausam, it has to be noted that he is playing an Air Force Officer in the film. The lady opposite him would be Sonam Kapoor who would play an innocent Kashmiri girl. Wow! Here’s a couple that’s new and fresh.
This Pankaj Kapoor Directorial film and produced by Madhu Mantena who also produced Ghajini, is going to be shot in some rather exotic locales which will be shown as Kashmir Valley. One of them is Edinburgh in the United Kingdom where our good looking Kapoor boy dressed in the air officer’s uniform is going to look every bit fetching. Watch out women… this one is going to take the cake away!
She was rumoured to be seeing her Badmaash Company co-star Shahid Kapoor, but even before the film could release, it’s all in the distant past for Anushka Sharma.
She’s now painting the town red with newcomer Ranveer Singh, who is her co-star in Yash Raj’s next, Shaadi Mubarak Ho, directed by debutant Maneesh Sharma.
Anushka and Ranveer spotted together on Saturday night at a suburban café. Dressed casually in tracks and a tee, Ranveer was having dinner while watching a live cricket match.
A source from the unit reveals, “Both the youngsters, Anushka and Ranveer, hit it off immediately when they met each other on the sets. The chemistry was clearly evident but most people didn’t pay it much attention then. But as shooting progressed, Ranvir and Anushka started spending more and more time together.”
The source continues, “Now they are bonding even off sets. They have been catching up for private dinners and outings, even though Ranveer has been given strict instructions by Yash Raj to lie low and not make any public appearance.
They normally keep the meetings very discreet. Ranveer is a very ambitious guy and keeps discussing movies and his career with Anushka. He is very fond of her.”
However, Anushka’s official spokesperson says, “There is no element of truth in this at all.” However, our source maintains that Anushka and Ranveer are very much a couple at the moment.

Yash Raj’s latest offering Badmaash Company has something exciting for everyone. A film based on four individuals who get on the wrong side of law and start their own company indeed goes by an apt title.
Shahid Kapoor, who will be seen in more than one avatar in the film, is surely going to be a treat to watch with his cropped hair spiked look for the most parts, but its one film old Anushka Sharma who is all set to surprise audiences with her new, hot and sizzling look, a complete contrast to her simpleton image in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Besides Shahid and Anushka, the film also stars Meiyang Chang and Vir Das in important roles.
The four of them had a complete blast during the making of the film so much so that while shooting a beach party scene they got so involved in the scene that the party continued even after the shoot. Food and drinks were called on as the party continued till the wee hours with people having a late night swim in the sea.
Looks like this bunch surely knows how to word hard and party harder!
MADHUREETA MUKHERJEE (BOMBAY TIMES; April 1, 2010)
It was a ‘bad-mood’ day for all at the ZOOM studios — especially for Shahid Kapoor and his heroine Anushka Sharma. The weather was hot enough as it is, but the mood was hotter as Shahid and Anushka – along with co-stars Vir Das and Chang – came to do a promotional interview for Yashraj’s next Badmaash Company. Everything was fine until ZOOM anchor Nandini Vaid began asking the crew about how it was for such a diverse cast to work together. Established stars with newcomers. At that Shahid replied with, “Yes, these young actors are relatively new and take a while to get into the groove.”
It led to all the other three taking offense and reacting angrily. But Shahid went on stating that he felt Vir Das was a miscast for the film. It led Anushka to jump to Vir’s defence with a, “You didn’t cast for them, so how can you say that.”
It upset Shahid greatly and he retorted by saying, “Why are you jumping in? It’s between me and Vir.” Anushka immediately snapped, “Shut Up Shahid!”
It put the good-looking hero in an instant bad mood and he then switched off by telling her, “This is an old habit of yours Anushka. So just let it be.”
The awkwardness was apparent on all faces as Nandini tried to calm everyone down, but soon after, ‘wrap’ was called and everyone rushed off to their respective make-up rooms.”
In fact, Shahid even whispered to us at ZOOM later, “I don’t like this at all. It was like sitting in a grill session. I’m not too pleased.” The Yashraj team ran helter-skelter trying to appease all, but to no avail. As a highly stressed and irritable Shahid, Anushka, also Vir and Chang — went their separate ways.
Explosive? Yes. Heated? Very. But it was all there on camera for everyone to see. And it was sad. But we all know na? Stars will be stars. Egos and all. Right?

The promo of Yash Raj Films’ next release Badmaash Company starring Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in lead roles was unveiled last week and going by the looks of it, the film promises to be a complete entertainer. Directed by Parmeet Sethi, the film tells the story of four friends (Shahid, Anushka, Chang and Vir Das) who want to make it big in life.
For both Shahid and Anushka, this is the second film with the coveted Yash Raj banner. While Shahid starred in the fairly ordinary Dil Bole Hadippa alongside Rani Mukherjee, Anushka made a super debut opposite none other than SRK in Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
In Badmaash Company however, both Shahid and Anushka would be seen in a young, fresh and altogether new look. Anushka, who in her first film, was mostly seen sporting Indian wear has gone glamorous for this role wearing cool and funky tops and hot pants. Shahid on the other hand too seems to be sporting a new cropped spiked look compared to his long hair look in Dil Bole Hadippa.
Apparently, both Shahid and Anushka had a great time shooting for the film. There were a few sequences in the movie where the cast needed to shoot some water sports and games. Shahid and Anushka took this sportsmanship very seriously and carried on playing games like badminton and beach volleyball even after pack up. To everyone’s surprise, Anushka turned out to be the better player and beat Shahid everyday.
At the end of the day as long as the movie turns out to be victorious at the B.O., Shahid couldn’t care less. What say?
