Actor Imran Khan may have done away with his bearded look post the shooting of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, however it seems like he’s in no rush to get out of the character anytime soon. The actor who will be seen playing a rustic Haryanvi in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola recently performed on stage at an awards event. And while he had done away with the beard, he made an action-packed entry on a bike and with an attitude befitting his character of Matru in the film. Says a source from the event, “Imran’s act was an instant hit, right from the entry on the bike to his attitude. It was a far cry from his chocolate hero image that he had so far, but he pulled it off with an amazing ease.”

However, the actor himself shared that getting under the skin of the character for the film was nothing less than a challenge. “I have never even been to a village, so to play a character like this was very challenging. I had to change everything — right from my body language to my diction to my looks — everything took a 360 degree turn. This must be the hardest I’ve ever worked on a character,” says Imran who had worked on a dialect with a language coach for the character. And while his look did get a thumbs up from his female fans, wife Avantika Malik reportedly wasn’t too happy about his unkempt bearded look. “Yes, she is not too much in More >

The actor has thrown open the doors of the newly renovated 24, Pali Hill that has now been christened NH bungalow

Mehul S Thakkar (MUMBAI MIRROR; December 20, 2012)

It has been over a year since Imran Khan had moved out of his grandfather, the late Nasir Hussain’s bungalow in Pali Hill, Bandra. Reason: it was being renovated according to the 29-year-old actor’s wishes. And most of his wishes have been granted – the new preview theatre named after his grandmum and christened Ayesha Talkies, included. So, Imran has now planned a party to mark his homecoming. Incidentally, the house-warming bash will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of 24, Pali Hill.

When we sent a text message to Imran, asking him about the party that has been planned for Saturday, he immediately replied: “Yes, we are having a housewarming party on the 22nd. We are also celebrating the 50th year anniversary of my family moving into the house.”

A source spilled the details of the bash. “Imran had been caught up with the promotions of Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola and took his own time to decide on the date for the housewarming party. Meanwhile, Avantika had been busy shifting home from the Hill Road apartment to the bungalow. She had also been overlooking the final touches on the interiors,” said the source.

We found out that the housewarming is going to be a close-knit family affair for the Khans with few close friends from the film industry in attendance as well.

Imran Khan, 29, meets us at his nana’s bungalow. This bungalow is replete with history as it originally belonged to Nasir Hussain, one of the most successful director-producers of his time. Imran, who has lived here from his childhood and who is now tasting his own success, has revamped the bungalow to give it his own modern touch. In a freewheeling interview with Bombay Times, he talks about grappling with failure, his role model Aamir Khan and how he got trained with slaps from NK Sharma for his upcoming film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Excerpts:

You have renovated and are living in your grandfather Nasir Hussain’s house. How emotionally attached are you to it? For me, this is a major labour of love as my family completes 50 years of living here. I was born in the US and my parents got divorced when I was just two, at which point I moved back here with my mother. My father was half-Bengali and half Scottish and his surname was Pal. My mother is half Muslim and half Christian. My original name was Imran Khan Pal, but my mother dropped Pal when we came back. When I was ten, I went to a boarding school in Ooty. There was a fight between the trustees and our principal and they kicked him out. The principal stood up and asked us if anyone wanted to go with him and about 20 of us put our hands up as we liked him. He had a farm land on the outskirts of Ooty, where he set up the gurukul where I studied for five years. I learnt a More >

Imran Khan and wife Avantika along with his mother Nuzhat moved to Bungalow N.H.24 ahead of Diwali. The iconic bungalow built by late filmmaker Nasir Hussain, Imran’s grandfather, is a Pali Hill landmark. Built on December 15, 1962, the residence completes 50 years of existence this year.

Says a source, “Imran thought it would be fitting to throw a bash on Dec 15 to commemorate the occasion. However, no event in Imran’s house is complete without his maamu Aamir and since Aamir is away for a shoot during that period, the bash is being held on Dec 22.”

Bollywood’s who’s who — veterans and today’s stars alike — are expected to attend this party because there are a lot of industry sentiments attached to the late Nasir saab.

Asha Parekh tells Mirror what it feels like to turn 70

Subhash K Jha (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 3, 2012)

On October 1, at a Juhu five star, yesteryears’ jubilee actress Asha Parekh celebrated her 70th birthday. And the party that went on till the wee hours of the morning saw a most impressive turnout. Among the first to arrive were Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. Jaya was caught chatting up with Shammi Aunty, Parekh’s best friend. Saira Banu arrived with Dilip Kumar and the couple were spotted deep in discussion with Yash Chopra. The real surprise for Parekh was the appearance of the entire family of Nasir Hussain. Hussain had not only introduced Asha Parekh to Hindi films in Dil Deke Dekho in 1959 they went on to forge a very special and enduring professional and personal friendship that lasted for three decades.

Representing the late Hussain at the bash on Monday evening were the late filmmaker’s son Mansoor Ali Khan (making a rare appearance in Mumbai) and daughter Nuzhat Khan. Imran Khan who is Nuzhat’s son was also present with his wife Avantika. Nasir Hussain’s brother the late Tahir Hussain’s widow was also there to wish the birthday girl.

Barely able to control her joy Parekh said, “Many of my co-stars and directors are no more. But their family was there to share my happiness. I felt a lump in my throat. But I quickly swallowed it down with a glass of wine.”

The actor will shift here this Diwali, after living in a rented apartment for nearly two years

Meena Iyer (BOMBAY TIMES; September 23, 2012)

24, Pali Hill, the bungalow built by legendary filmmaker, the late Nasir Hussain, is 50 years old. It is one of the most iconic residences on Mumbai’s Pali Hill and it is currently the home to Nasir saab’s grandson, actor Imran Khan, his wife Avantika and Imran’s mother Nuzhat. For close to two years now, Imran and Avantika have been renting an apartment on Hill Road, Bandra because the bungalow was under renovation.

But sources tell us the couple will move back into their home on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

24 Pali Hill that reportedly has solar energy, a swimming pool and other modern amenities, is also likely to be named after Nasir saab, the man who gave Bollywood superhits like Teesri Manzil, Yaadon Ki Baraat and Hum Kisise Kum Nahin. It is the address where Bollywood supremo Aamir Khan — who lives a stone’s throw away — has some of his most intimate parties. And we hear that Avantika, who is going to start living in the bungalow for the first time after her marriage, is expected to have a house-warming party for the who’s who of the film industry, come Diwali.

24 Pali Hill looks almost ready. Imran Khan and his wife Avantika are hoping to move in by Diwali this year

Jigar Shah (MID-DAY; August 21, 2012)

Ever since the last 19 months, Imran Khan’s 24 Pali Hill residence has been under renovation.

The bungalow that belonged to the actor’s grandfather, filmmaker Nasir Hussain, was the venue of Imran’s wedding to his wife Avantika, back in January 2011. Now, word is that the renovations of the house will be more or less completed by Diwali and the couple will move in soon.

Our source says, “Imran has been staying with Avantika in a smaller flat in Bandra. The work is almost done. The noise coming from the renovation work is also slowing down. The family might move in soon.” Imran tells us, “The renovation is not yet complete. I hope to shift back by Diwali. But honestly, it’s in the hands of the workers!”

Incidentally, buzz was that Imran had wanted the bungalow to have a special viewing room with the latest technology available to watch films. However, after a whopping price tag of Rs 80 lakh was quoted for it, Imran had apparently found it way too steep. To know whether he finally went for it or not, we have to wait and watch…

Sayantan Dalal (DNA; August 20, 2012)

Imran Khan

This year actor Imran Khan will be celebrating Eid in Delhi. The actor, who is extremely busy with his numerous projects will be shooting tomorrow, even though it’s a holiday. Imran, however, has taken out some time from his busy schedule to celebrate the feast with his old buddies.

Says a source close to Imran, “Yes, this is the first time he won’t be spending Eid-ul-fitar here in Mumbai. He is spending it in Delhi because of his work commitments. This is a major festival, but unfortunately he won’t be able to spend it with his family, including wife Avantika Malik. But Imran has thought of a way to still make time for a little celebration, and has planned a get-together. He has a lot of friends in the capital city, so as soon as he gets time off from work, he’s going to meet up with his friends and celebrate the festival.”

The source further adds, “Apart from the yummy food that one gets to dig into at this time of the year, Imran is also looking forward to catching up on Ek Tha Tiger at a nearest theatre there. He wanted to see the film on the weekend, but didn’t get the time. So, he is planning to watch it there on Monday.”

A friend close to the actor reveals that Imran also plans to visit Paranthewali gali at Chandni Chowk during his stay in Delhi. This will be the first time he will be visiting the place after having shot for Delhi Belly last year. “During the shooting of Delhi Belly, he used to often visit More >
