Deepika Padukone-Katrina Kaif in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani?

The buzz is the two heroines are in advanced stages of talks with Bhansali, whose dream project is finally about to take off after 14 years

Vickey Lalwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 13, 2013)

For 14 years Sanjay Leela Bhansali has nursed this dream. And from the looks of it, it may come true. The stage is set for Bajirao Mastani, a film that Bhansali first spoke about in 1999 and which is best remembered for the acrimonious fallout between his chosen lead pair in 2002 – Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai.

The epic historical, based on the life of Peshwa Bajirao and his ladylove Mastani, went through several casting changes (see box), but never really made it to the finishing line. But the jinx could well wear off, now that Eros International has agreed to produce the film.

A source close to the developments told this newspaper, “After Ram Leela releases in October 2013, Bhansali will start with the pre production of Bajirao Mastani. He will begin shooting in April 2014.” Added the source, “Eros and Bhansali have had a fabulous working relationship during Ram Leela. Their collaboration on Bajirao Mastani will strengthen their association.”

Early buzz suggests Bhansali is eyeing a casting coup of sorts. He is in advanced stages of talks with Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif for the roles of Mastani and Bajirao’s wife Kashibai.

“Apparently, Bhansali has had a word with both Deepika and Katrina. The girls have shown tremendous interest,” says the source. While this could be Katrina’s More >

Actors, filmmakers talk about prostitute phenomenon in Bollywood

As Kangna Ranaut gears up to play one, After Hrs talks to actresses and makers of films based on similar subject to find out why such roles stand out…

Aakanksha Naval-Shetye (DNA; March 23, 2013)

Playing a courtesan onscreen has almost always been a staple outing for our B-Town beauties. In the earlier years the actress used to be a mujrewali rather than sex worker. Vyjanthimala (Devdas), Madhubala (Mughal-e-Azam), Meena Kumari (Pakeezah) and Rekha (Muqaddar Ka Sikandar) to name a few. Only Sharmila Tagore (Mausam) Waheeda Rehman (Pyaasa) and Shabana Azmi (Mandi) were bold enough to play a full-blown street walker. The newer lot doesn’t shy away from playing a prostitute onscreen. From costumes, to dialogues and body language, they go all out to get it right. Kareena Kapoor has done two such roles (Chameli and Talaash) while others are Tabu (Chandni Bar) Sushmita Sen (Chingari) Rani Mukherji (Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Saawariya) Neha Dhupia (Julie) and Aishwarya Rai (Umrao Jaan). The latest in line to play such a character is Kangna Ranaut in Rajjo.

Risky business? Kangna Ranaut feels that a film’s risk factor has nothing to do with the subject, but the execution, “And that applies to all films not just films based on prostitution. It is not about actresses making bold choices, but filmmakers being ready to explore such topics onscreen. That has been possible because of actresses who have shown that it can be done.” She agrees with most actresses when they say that it’s More >

Meet the inadequately paid stunt artistes of Bollywood

Thanks to ‘herogiri’, stunt artistes are much in demand. But who’s paying?

Shubha Shetty (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 18, 2013)

With the surge in bigbudget action films starring brawny actors, stuntmen and body doubles are much in demand. Even though these fearless and faceless men and women bring graphic action scenes to life, they continue to risk their lives for a pittance – they earn Rs 3,500 – to Rs 8,000 for eight hours, and have no insurance cover to fall back on. Here are the Fantastic Four, who ensure that everytime they take the fall for the actors, the fans applaud their icon’s herogiri.

ASIF MEHTA (BODY DOUBLE FOR : EMRAAN HASHMI, MANOJ BAJPAYEE)

A stuntman since seven years, Asif has a unique formula to conquer fear. “Suppose you have to leap through a glass door. Keep convincing yourself that the door is made of nothing but thermocol. And you will complete the stunt without getting a single scratch on your body. You just have to train your mind,” he says.

Although his father, Rashid Khan, was a stuntman, Asif had other dreams and studied graphic designing in Australia. He was obsessed with motor racing and it was an accident on the tracks that changed his life forever. After his father had a word with him, he used his energies to eke out a career in stuntmanship.

However, there was one scene where his technique failed him. “It was a shot for Manoj Bajpayee in Shootout At Wadala. I was to be hurled through a glass wall while sitting on a chair. I ended up with a More >

The action’s literally heating up with stars outdoing each other on fireworks

Ismat Tahseen (BOMBAY TIMES; November 11, 2012)

Bollywood crackers are the talk of the town in the run-up to the Festival of Lights. So, Dream Girl Hema Malini on phooljhadi boxes shares space with Aishwarya Rai flowerpots, Priyanka and Deepika ground wheels, and even a Saifeena cracker that’s set to light up the sky too!

A well-known firework seller at Mohammed Ali Road says business is booming and it’s tough to say which star is the best seller. Nitin Waghmare of a cracker stall near Parel grins when you ask him about the bestselling phataka. “Kareena sparklers sabse popular hai,’ he says. “Sonakshi Sinha ladi bombs bhi zabardast hai.” That’s not all… folks are queuing up for Priyanka Chopra rockets and Asin chakris as well. There’s also a Nargis (Fakhri) aerial bomb, that erupts in multicolours with over a 100 shots. And guess what? Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is on a few boxes too!

Gals apart, actors are vying for attention too. Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan as well as the Khan trio — Salman, SRK and Aamir are set to burn a hole in your pocket. Ramesh Babu, who runs a makeshift cracker stall near Dadar says Akshay Kumar anars and electric chakris are hot sellers. “The kids love him,” he says. “Prices have gone up a little this year with the entry of new crackers like ‘multicoloured sky shots’, but people are still buying and business is sure to double a day or two before Diwali,” More >

Salman Khan gets his way on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa?

The makers of the dance-reality reality show were stunned when Salman Khan apparently made some ‘special’ demands in exchange of appearing on the programme

Jigar Shah (MID-DAY; August 21, 2012)

After all with Salman Khan, it’s either “my way or the highway!” Sources say that recently, the makers of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 were in for a surprise when Sallu put forth his demands in exchange of agreeing to appear on their show.

Our source says, “Salman was set to appear on the jodi-special episode. As most of the jodis had chosen to perform on his film songs, the actor had specified he did not want any track on the show that was originally filmed on him and former flame Aishwarya Rai.”

Sallu also apparently demanded that no Shah Rukh Khan track was to feature on the show. The source says, “Darsheel and Avneet performed their act to SRK’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge song. Salman appeared on the show only after the song was over.”

The source adds that during the show, the actor was also spotted sketching in his notepad. However, when the show was over, he simply picked up his notebook and left, without anyone else getting a chance to have a peek at his drawings.

Rock the floor While on the show, Sallu’s co-star Katrina Kaif pushed him to perform with Madhuri Dixit on a Hum Aapke Hai Kaun track. Though, he was not really in the mood, he later relented. Afterwards, when the two retired to their vanity vans, Salman apparently gently reprimanded Kat for having forced him to More >

From Madhuri’s side ponytail in Ek Do Teen to Deepika’s grunge look in her debut, Bharat and Dorris Godambe have together made up tinsel town’s faces since the ’80s

Reema Gehi (MUMBAI MIRROR; July 22, 2012)

There are many things that go into a film star’s mannequin-like appearance, from hiding their slightest blemish to coiffing their hair to perfection. Make-up artists and hairstylists Bharat and Dorris Godambe would know. After all, the duo has dolled up a generation of movie idols, both, on and off screen.

Think of Madhuri Dixit’s swinging sidepony tail in Ek Do Teen in Tezaab, Rani Mukherji’s glam look in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Sonam Kapoor’s traditional belle act in Saawariya and Deepika Padukone’s dual avatar in Om Shanti Om.

Having worked in the beauty industry for more than three decades, the duo now owns the Bharat & Dorris salon-cum-studio in Oshiwara. “It was my husband’s dream to have our own studio and brand, and I had to fulfill it,” says doting wife Dorris, while we wait for Bharat and his 27-year-old son Suraj, a celebrity-hairstylist. Minutes later, the two scurry in. “The Dabangg 2 shoot wrapped up a bit late last night,” says Suraj, apologetically.

Dorris is eleven years younger than Bharat, now 58. Through the conversation, Bharat breaks his silence only a few times, and lets Dorris do most of the talking. “I never completed my education. My sister Veena was Amrita Singh’s hairstylist. She fell sick during the shoot of Mard, so she sent me to the set. More >

Mirror gets you the controversial list of invitees for the filmmaker’s 40th birthday party

Kunal M Shah (MUMBAI MIRROR; May 17, 2012)

The venue is fixed. The menu decided. And good friend Manish Malhotra is busy chalking out the details of Karan Johar’s birthday bash. But there are two people who are going to miss out on what is being touted as the most happening party of recent times.

With the guest list now ready, Mirror has found out that Priyanka Chopra and Ram Gopal Varma don’t feature in it at all. The actress and the filmmaker will not get to see the cards that are being printed specially in New Delhi. Gopal Varma’s exclusion doesn’t really come as a surprise. The two filmmakers – Ramu and KJo have spared no opportunity to take digs at each other in the past. However, the fact that Priyanka also failed to make it to the list of over 300 invitees comes as a shocker. While it is known that the filmmaker hasn’t been too happy with his Dostana actress of late, dropping her altogether from his birthday party goes on to show just how miffed Karan is with her.

Clearly, Karan isn’t too keen on waving the white flag to either Ramu or Priyanka. But there’s one man he is willing to extend the olive branch. A source told Mirror, “Karan has invited Sanjay Leela Bhansali with whom he had a tiff recently. In fact, he has invited all his friends from the industry. However, his good friend Arjun Rampal, Sonam Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai will not be able to attend the party due to More >

Sneha Ullal uploads raunchy video

Yahoo! India OMG

Sneha Ullal, the pretty girl who made her debut opposite Salman Khan in ‘Lucky No Time for Love’ seems to be looking for an image makeover.

There was a time when Sneha hogged the limelight for being Salman Khan’s muse; being Aishwarya Rai’s look alike, but beyond that, she never could make ripples in Bollywood for her acting skills. So, like many others before and after her, she headed south. She is busy doing Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam films.  And then, came this viral video which is creating ripples on the internet.

The video titled ‘Lick’ has Sneha purring away seductively. According to an interview she gave the Times of India, she says, “I had an off from work as it was a rainy day in Hyderabad. Since I had my makeup on, my photographer friend said ‘let’s shoot a video’ and this was an impromptu act that we did in my hotel suite.” They then uploaded the video on a video sharing platform and it went viral within hours.

Will this give Sneha the much needed screen space in Bollywood? We wonder

Ajay, David drop their past; start afresh

0

By Joginder Tuteja, April 14, 2011 – 10:03 IST

Ajay Devgn and David Dhawan have forgotten the past and with Rascals, it is turning out to be an all new beginning for them. More than a decade back though it was an altogether different scenario with the actor and the director at loggerheads with each other.

“Today’s generation is not aware about the problems that the duo had during the late 90s”, informs a senior industry insider, “Those were the times when Dhawan was the undisputed ‘baadshah’ of comic cinema with dozen odd hits with Govinda and Salman Khan. On the other hand, Ajay was miles away from comedy with Ishq being a sole exception. Those were the days when he used to do action flicks by dozens. Needless to say, there was no way that the two could have worked together since they excelled in genres that were poles apart.”

This was not the only reason which separated the duo. There have been legendary tales around how the two just couldn’t get along with each other and Ajay had even commented around how he could never be seen in the kind of cinema that Dhawan made.

“This is the reason why it was shocking for the industry when Ajay agreed to work with Dhawan in Amitabh Bachchan-Sanjay Dutt-Aishwarya Rai starrer Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin (2002). No one could see that coming. The two never worked with each other again but Ajay decided to hit the comic route with a vengeance post the release of the film”, continues the insider.

Though Ajay and Dhawan never More >
