Veteran filmmaker Mrinal Sen is credited with initiating the New Cinema movement in India. As he turns 90 on May 14, Mirror has learnt the man who gave us memorable films like Raatbhor, Neel Akasher Neechey, Baishey Shravan, Bhuvan Shome and Khandhar is all set to direct once again. And this time, it would be a sci-fi flick.
A source close to Sen revealed, “Mrinal Sen is going to direct a film with Naseeruddin shah and Soumitra Chatterjee in English. It will be a science fiction with a comic flavor.” The source added, “Naseer’s parts will be in English and Hindi while Soumitra Chatterjee’s character will speak in English and Bangla.”
On the occasion of Sen’s 90th birthday, the icing on the cake is that Sen also completes six decades as director in Indian cinema. What’s more, three of his classics will be restored by Martin Scorsese of Hugo fame, the films in question being Bhuvan Shome, Kolkata Trilogy and Aakale Sandhani. Earlier too, plans were in the offing to restore these films however they didn’t materialise courtesy the recession.
The noted filmmaker’s debut film Raatbhor had the iconic Uttam Kumar who wasn’t even famous at the time. Baishey Shravan (the day when Rabindranath Tagore died) was the film that gave him international exposure. Bhuvan Shome (Mr. Shome) launched him as a major filmmaker both nationally and internationally.
