…but a gripping show keeps him hooked, says Akshay Kumar, who’s set to judge aspiring cooks on a reality show starting tonight
Roshni K Olivera | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 17, 2010)
Akshay Kumar, whose culinary skills were honed alongside his martial arts prowess in Bangkok, is returning to the small screen in a different avatar with MasterChef India on Star Plus, 9 pm tonight. The channel, in keeping with its new brand promise of ‘Rishta wahi, soch nayi’, intends to attract Indian cooking talent from home kitchens and lead them to stardom. The show, that is based on an international format, tests the culinary skills of 12 creative and passionate cooks under immense time pressure. Joining Akshay are Chefs Kunal Kapoor and Ajay Chopra as co-judges, together they will choose the MasterChef from among the participants of the show. “Great cooking not only leads to great food but also great drama… and that’s what is in store for viewers,” says Akshay. Excerpts from the interview…
How tough are you going to be with contestants?
I am only as tough as I need to be. I’m not a bully, but neither am I here to paint rainbows with them. I encourage and inspire these MasterChef aspirants like you wouldn’t believe! To me they are like my children, I nurture and guide them through the tasks set with love and firmness.
How would you rate yourself as a cook?
Hmmm… I hope by cook you don’t mean a chef because I don’t consider myself a chef. Being a chef is a big deal and an even bigger honour. Cooking is an art in itself, and it is not easy to master. We may love to paint, but that doesn’t mean anyone would want to buy it. I consider myself a decent cook, but I am a great eater with a very experienced palate. However, if you ask my family they love my cooking. Personally I would give myself 6 out of 10.
Big B, Salman Khan and you are hosting shows… how do you react to comparisons?
In this field comparisons are inevitable. However, all three of us are doing shows of different genres. Amitabhji and Salman are great people, brilliant actors and fantastic hosts. We all have something very different to give, but really we just want to entertain our audiences. It’s the channels that have the extra pressure and points to prove. We as actors only have good wishes for each other and I know all of us will be giving our best. Let’s just let people enjoy their evening TV time and be happy at how great entertainment is these days.
How anxious are you about public reaction? As much as you would have been before a film release?
It’s different. In my films I always seem to have much more pressure on my shoulders. There’s a difference between someone flicking the channel over and someone walking out of your movie. Both hurt, but it’s not the same. In fact I myself am a complete channel-hopper, but if something grips me then I am hooked for sure, and I know how gripping MasterChef is. You feel for these guys so much, you learn so much, there are emotions flying. There’s something extra special about this show, so right now I’m more excited than anxious.
After allegedly tanking up excessively at the success party of his show ‘Being Human’, Salman Khan failed to make it to an early morning special shoot of Bigg Boss 4
Salman and his entourage of Bollywood actresses might have come out of his ‘Being Human’ show, with flying colours but what followed the next day was shocking to say the least. Buzz is that the Bigg Boss 3 team had requested Salman to shoot a special episode on Sunday (October 10), which they could air on Monday (October 11). The intention was to lock horns with Kaun Banega Crorepati 4 (both the shows are aired at 9 pm). The creatives team of Bigg Boss felt that this way they could grab more eyeballs and thereby affect the TRPs of Amitabh Bachchan’s Kaun Banega Crorepati’s opening episode.
Salman is featured only on Fridays and Saturdays and not Mondays. Normally, he shoots every Friday for both the episodes.
After the Bigg Boss team members explained to Sallu as to how important it was for them to beat the opening episode of Bachchan’s Kaun Banega Crorepati 4, he agreed to shoot for it early in the morning on Sunday. But a shock awaited the team in Lonavla, where the shoot was scheduled. Salman never turned up for the shoot.
The Bigg Boss team, which was waiting in the early hours of Sunday, was informed only around noon that Salman would not make it to Lonavla that day. Left with no other alternative, the unit packed up.
You wonder what Sallu’s golden words were. Adds the source, “Salman excused himself by saying that he was indisposed. He was actually celebrating the success of the Being Human show till the wee hours of Sunday morning. Salman was in very high spirits after the Being Human show.”
Ironically, Salman had apparently invited many members of the Bigg Boss team to the Being Human show.”
Another source confirms that it was Sallu’s absence on October 10 that caused the shoot to be cancelled at the last moment. “Salman was in Panvel on Sunday (Panvel isn’t far from Lonavla).”
An insider from Bigg Boss 4 reveals, “Our plan wasn’t exactly to kill Kaun Banega Crorepati’s opening episode (note that he isn’t denying it), but it was also that we wanted to surprise the contestants of Bigg Boss 4.”
When asked what exactly Sallu told the channel people, he adds, “The channel was told that he had an eye infection.”
When contacted, Bigg Boss’s broadcaster’s official spokesperson didn’t comment on the story.
Big B has butterflies in his tummy as he returns with India’s favourite game show on his birthday tomorrow
Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; October 10, 2010)
Starting 9 pm tomorrow the streets of India are likely to resemble a ghost town. The iconic Amitabh Bachchan, the man who changed the face of Indian television, is returning to the country’s favourite game show Kaun Banega Crorepati on Sony Entertainment Television. Adrenaline rushes will be felt by most, especially when it comes to watching who amongst the audience makes it to the hot seat and gets a shot at becoming a crorepati.
Talking about his favourite show, the Big B says, “Kaun Banega Crorepati is truly a show which is of the people, by the people and for the people. It gives every Indian an equal opportunity to win a life changing amount. In our culture we are taught to value knowledge, that it is rewarding, KBC re-affirms that view as a person can use that knowledge and win 5 crore on the show.” Describing that empty feeling in the pit of his stomach as he gets ready to host KBC, he says, “One is always anxious because it is a creative job. One has to come in front of an audience. And, the audience is going to rate us on how we have done, whether we have lived up to their expectation or not. When you have to present something to the audience, there is always that apprehension. With creativity comes nervousness.’’
The legend also admits that a part of the nervousness comes from the fact that he doesn’t understand this medium too well. Says he, “The channel is more anxious than perhaps people who participate because they design something. And, we (the hosts) just do it according to the design.’’
The opening of KBC will have a rocking performance from Bachchan to a medley of hit songs. He will deliver some memorable dialogues from his vast repertoire. And, India’s most recognised baritone will also recite a special poem written by his father, the legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. The special tracks have been created by Vishal-Shekhar, performance has been choreographed by the incomparable Shiamak Davar, sets by India’s foremost art director — Nitin Desai, and clothes have been designed by Vikram Phadnis. With the show launching on the same day he turns 68, Amitabh says that he couldn’t have asked for a better birthday gift. With a 5 crore jackpot which can be won in 60 minutes flat, introduction of a timer on the questions and new life-lines, the game is bound to excite. “I will still say lock kiya jaye because certain phrases have been formatted after a lot of thought and they should not be changed,’’ says the KBC boss.
Kaun Banega Crorepati starts from October 11 at 9 pm, Monday to Thursday, on SONY Entertainment Television.
The actor’s game show will go on air only if the channel meets his demands
Sharin Wader Butani | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; July 8, 2010)
It’s not Amitabh Bachchan’s KBC that has pushed Salman Khan’s Dus Ka Dum onto the backburner as was reported some time back. If sources are to be believed, then Salman himself has put his show on hold till the channel agrees to his demands. And his demand has got nothing to do with himself… as usual, it’s for one of his brothers — actor-turned-producer Sohail Khan.
The bade bhai wants the channel to take on two shows that his chote bhai has produced — a fiction one and a non-fiction one. And sources say the superstar himself might make an appearance in the fiction show titled Raste Ka Zero Ban Gaya Hero. Meanwhile, if the channel agrees and Salman comes to the negotiating table, then his show will go on air around Diwali just like Big B’s KBC. And there won’t be any clashes with the timings because KBC will be aired from Monday to Thursday between 9 and 10 pm and Dus Ka Dum on Friday and Saturday between 10 pm and 11 pm.
It is common knowledge that Aamir Khan and Salman Khan are bonding big time these days. Aamir too admits to his close friendship with Salman and says, “Yes, I am very fond of Salman. I also spend time with him whenever we can match our schedules.”
What is more interesting about the Khans apart from their friendship is the buzz about their nocturnal adventures. Rumour has it that when Aamir’s wife Kiran Rao is away at their weekend bungalow in Panchgani, the actor packs off the rest of his staff such as his personal assistant by around 9pm but retains his security staff.
A source says that when Aamir retains his security staff beyond midnight, it is a dead giveaway that he is going to be visiting his best friend Salman.
So what do these two forty plus actors do on their boys’ night out?
A common friend says that Aamir drives to Salman’s home in Bandra; where he parks his vehicle. Then Salman gets his red motorcycle out and the two go for a spin. Both their security staff follow them in their respective vehicles. After their nocturnal spin, they invariably land up either at Salman’s bachelor pad and have a round of drinks; or if Kiran is out of town, they land up at Aamir’s home.
And that’s not all. It is said that Aamir, who is currently on a diet, is known to break his resolve on nights that he is with Salman.
The Aamir-Salman friendship also extends to having special previews of their films for each other. Aamir had a sneak preview of Ghajini for Salman and Sachin Tendulkar. After the trial, Salman had given Aamir some suggestions on ‘changes’ to be made; which Aamir incorporated into the film.
Anyway, this time around too, Aamir who is currently in Delhi will hold a special screening of 3 Idiots only for Salman. Of course the trial is likely to happen only after December 3, because Salman, Katrina Kaif, Sridevi, Celina Jaitley and Neha Dhupia are expected to perform for a show in Dubai on December 2.
Guess, sooner or later, even Salman will hold a special screening of Veer, which is slated for a January 22 release next year, for Aamir too.

Before putting his contestants through hell, Akshay attempted every stunt himself, and once convinced that they were all achievable… and by women, he invited the contestants to give it their best shot. But, after wrestling crocodiles, jumping from one plane to another and eating snakes… did he think they would stop screaming at a cockroach, lizard or rat? “These women have learned there’s nothing they can’t handle anymore. Men aren’t such a necessity, I’m afraid, us guys are going have to work a lot harder to impress our women now for sure. When all those housewives see these young pretty models dipping there heads into a box of screaming cockroaches and swimming with crocodiles, and coming out alive and feeling proud and amazed at their bravery, I know it will make them think twice before they scream for their husbands. It’s all about spreading the awareness that even if it scares you… try and conquer one thing a day that frightens you.”
And he is right, contestants of the first season have told Akshay that, yes, by appearing on Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi last year and facing their fears… they are now better women. “Once you’ve been on the show, there’s no going back into your shells. I’ve met many of my last year’s contestants at functions, on aeroplanes, in films. Their lives are hectic, but they’ll never forget how hard and how cold and how life-changing their experience was with me. It’s something you’ll never loose… The rest of their lives is going to be easy compared to what they endured on last year’s show.” But in his book, action is not all about conquering fears. “Some people love it, they live off danger, fear is like food for some of them. For me there are some stunts I’d love to do everyday, but there are some I would never wish to do again no matter how much you wanted to pay me. Action is an ‘art’ it’s not a fear. If we were all taught to jump out of planes as children, we wouldn’t be scared to do it now, would we? But like this show proves, there is nothing to fear in life apart from fear itself…” And, there’s one little secret of Akshay’s that Bruna Abdullah, Sushma Reddy, Carol Gracias, Jesse Randhawa, Mandira Bedi, Nauheed Cyrusi, Rosa Catalano, Rupali Ganguly, Sonika Kaliraman, Shonali Nagrani, Pia Trivedi, Shveta Salve and Anoushka Manchanda — his 13 lovely women on the show, ought to know. The fear that the Action King of Bollywood has not been able to overcome. “I can’t stand the Merry-Go-Round or the Spinning Tea Cups at a fun fair,” revealed Akshay. “I know it sounds lame, but hey, I never said I was ‘SuperMan’. My whole life I’ve made sure I’m the one standing with the bags so everyone else in my family can go on that ride (even my son doesn’t know this about me yet). But I just can’t stand spinning round and round and round, I don’t understand the excitement of that ride, it makes me cringe!” Well, there you are…
ROSHNI K OLIVERA (BOMBAY TIMES; August 17, 2009)
Shah Rukh Khan is a henpecked husband. Salman Khan’s a mamma’s boy. And Hrithik Roshan had speech problems as a kid. These are revelations by the stars themselves to their buddy and new host on the block, Farah Khan. The actor-turned-choreographer is set to host a chat show on TV for the first time. The show Tere Mere Beach Mein on Star Plus produced by Farah’s production house gives viewers a glimpse into the ‘real’ life of a celebrity. Set on a backdrop inspired by the beaches of Goa, it instantly sets a mood of informal, uninhibited chats with the stars. Farah gets candid with celebrities from various walks of life to discuss what they have in similar with the common man! “The show is not about a celebrity’s stardom, but about life away from the arc lights. They are not on my show to plug their movie or talk about controversies. We take up one interesting theme or issue and talk about that. There are also non-celebs who come on the show and share their thoughts on the same topic,” explains Farah.
This seven week series comprises 14 episodes and the first celebrity on the show is Salman Khan with his mother Salma Khan, who’s always been media-shy. “It was so nice to have her on the show and she was absolutely candid,” says Farah. Brothers Irfan and Yusuf Pathan speak on sibling rivalry. “Yusuf was an eye opener, he was so funny,” reveals Farah. Karan Johar and Sonam Kapoor on the show talk about their journey from fat to thin and Shahid Kapoor and Genelia on second chances in life. “You see a different side of the celeb. From aspirational, it becomes more inspirational for the audience,” she points out. The show is her baby, right from conceptualising it to the implementation. “For every episode there’s a lot of research that has been done,” she adds.
Farah may have directed people, been a judge on shows, but playing a host is another ball game altogether. “I was very nervous initially,” she reveals. “We first shot the episode with John Abraham and Yuvraj Singh and the topic was male eye candy, how men are suddenly shedding clothes like never before! As a host you have to be alert, spontaneous and quick with your responses. Here, I realised being a judge on TV was a cakewalk!”
Tere Mere Beach Mein will be aired every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm on Star Plus
