Avtar Kishan Hangal aka AK Hangal (98) is critical. He is currently on oxygen support. The veteran actor was admitted to the Asha Parekh Hospital in Santacruz on August 16, after he slipped and fell in his bathroom on August 14, fracturing his right femur (thigh) bone. Initially, he was examined at home and put on medicines. However, later, he was shifted to the hospital’s ICU and put on ventilator support as his condition deteriorated.
Dr Vinod Khanna, orthopaedic surgeon, Asha Parekh Hospital, told Mirror, “During examination, we found he had severe chest complications and admitted him in the ICU. His condition is still critical. He is under constant observation.”
Hangal, who has been in and out of hospital with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis, chronic kidney disease and hypertension, needed to be operated however the doctors felt he was unfit to go under the knife. On Friday morning, he was even taken off the ventilator as it wasn’t helping him.
His son Vijay told us, “His condition is deteriorating but he is a fighter though there is little chance of his surviving. He suffered a hip fracture but we brought him to the hospital as his condition became serious. He was put on life support but two days later, the ventilator was removed as it wasn’t helping him in any way.”
Asked if the treatment was proving expensive, Vijay said, “Not at all. We have been using the funds the industry gave us for his medical treatment and well being.” Having actively participated in India’s freedom struggle in his younger days, Hangal celebrated the 65th anniversary of India’s independence along with media persons and actor-singer Ila Arun. Though, just a few friends of the actor from the industry have kept in touch with him.
BACK ON THE SETS
Not so long ago, the 98-year-old actor had told Mirror, “I have lived my life on the sets. And it was exciting to go back to one.” Hangal was reliving his experience of shooting for a new television show titled Madhubala after a gap of seven years. This picture was taken on the sets. He had reached the sets on a wheelchair and wasn’t sure he’d be able to handle the shoot physically. However, once the cameras started rolling, there was no stopping the actor within.
