Wife ke liye kuch bhi karega!
Are Bollywood celebrities a henpecked lot? Or are they just the best husbands in the world?Meena Iyer | TNN (BOMBAY TIMES; February 3, 2011)
In his acceptance speech at the recent Filmfare Awards night Shah Rukh Khan said, “My wife Gauri is the producer of My Name is Khan. If I hadn’t won an award for it, she would have admonished me.” Of course we know the Bollywood Badshah was just joking. But somewhere between the lines is a message that the top and bottom brass of Bollywood is going out of their way to keep their spouses happy.
Gauri Khan is no longer just a superstar wife. Hers is the name that features in the end credits as ‘producer’ in all SRK’s home productions. It is also a well-known fact that most of the other Bollywood wives secretly aspire to be like Gauri someday. So it is not surprising that other star biwis have also started moving in this direction.
Twinkle Khanna’s name now appears as producer for movies made by Akshay Kumar’s banner. Sources say that Manyata Dutt will have her name in the credits of her husband Sanjay Dutt’s home production Rascals. The superstar husbands are very happy to oblige their wives. A star himself confesses, “Keeping peace on the home front is necessary. Giving the wife the reins is making them feel important.” Aamir Khan, the very astute businessman, recently indulged his wife Kiran Rao by producing her film Dhobi Ghat-Mumbai Diaries. Not only did he allow the talented Kiran to make the kind of film she believed in, Aamir went to great lengths to promote it as well, borrowing heavily on his personal brand equity.
Like we said, it is not just the top brass in Bollywood that is in a mood to indulge their better halves, several other celebrities are doing the same. Film-maker Abbas Tyrewala burnt his fingers by casting his wife Pakhi as the leading lady in Jhootha Hi Sahi with an A-lister like John Abraham. Says a trade source, “Abbas was riding high after Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. He could have got any top heroine to do his film. But it was Pakhi he wanted. His stock came crashing down just because he used a script written by his wife and even cast her as the leading lady. Had he not done so, JHS may still have had some draw.” But who is to reason with a smitten husband? Film-maker Vipul Shah has made a commercial film for his National-award winning wife, Shefali Shah Kuch Love Jaisa where she stars in the lead with Rahul Bose. Quite obviously, an outside producer would hesitate to put his money on a yummy-mummy. While Shefali’s talent is not in doubt; her star-status is a question mark. But that’s for the outsider. For Vipul, the compulsions/considerations are different. Ketan Mehta is still, reportedly, struggling to release his own Rang Rasiya. But he is out there currently helping his wife, Deepa Sahi with her directorial venture Tere Mere Phere.
It clearly shows that Bollywood does have its share of ‘hen-pecked’ husbands who will indulge the wife before all else.
