The American season in Bollywood is on. After Anil Kapoor and 24, it’s now the turn of Anil’s Slumdog Millionaire co-star Irrfan Khan’s to star in Season 3 of the American show In Treatment. In Treatment is a hugely successful daily series about a psychologist, played by the gifted Gabriel Byrne, and his bizarre and poignant encounters with his various patients.

Inspired by the successful Israeli series Be Tipul, In Treatment has garnered rave reviews and immense popularity in just two years of being on air. Bryne won the Golden Globe Award for best performance by an actor in a television series – Drama for his role as Dr Paul Weston in the show.

Right after wrapping up his work in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Saat Khoon Maaf, Irrfan, who plays a South Asian but not an Indian in the show, leaves for New York for the shooting of Season 3, which starts in April 2010.

Irrfan was initially hesitant about confirming the news. “At the moment, all I can say is yes, I am doing American television for the first time. I will be in New York to shoot this series from April onwards. Incidentally, I started my career as an actor on Indian television and then moved to cinema. So it’s full circle for me,” he said.

Buzz is that Irrfan will play one of the central characters and his role requires considerable preparation. He will be seen in all the 43 episodes of the forthcoming season.

Although the actor is excited about making his television debut in the US, he has a bigger challenge to face before he leaves for NY.  “In Saat Khoon Maaf,  I play a character, who has tremendous masoomiyat (innocence) and at the same time, he has a deep dark secret within him. I have to portray all of this,” he said.

Irrfan and Vishal are also discussing a special look for his character. “I will be shooting in Coorg later this month. I have never been to that part of the world, so I am looking forward to it. However, the excitement is not about the new geographical territory but the new territory I will be covering as an actor,” he added.
